On the link http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/multicore.mspx

Q. How does this licensing policy affect products such as Microsoft Windows XP Professional?

A. Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Home are not affected by this policy as they are licensed per installation and not per processor. Windows XP Professional can support up to two processors regardless of the number of cores on the processor. Microsoft Windows XP Home supports one processor.

But I am still confused if you could use 1 processor with multiple cores on Home...

I'm pretty darn sure you can. Because if I can't then I'm going to nag at microsoft for not having better upgrade prices lol

EDIT: it says two processors not cores so that means two physical CPUs not just cores

Yeah, the processor thing is what I was wondering about. Im pretty sure it can handle dual CORE. It would be a horrible marketing flaw on Microsofts part not to allow that with Home.

Slider821, now that you have updated the BIOS to see dual core, have you now changed the driver in device manager to multi core from uni processor?. This will resolve the task manager issue and the o/s in still only running on 1 core!

I believe it is a driver update. Highlight the ACPI Uniprocessor, update driver and select ACPI Multiprocessor PC

When I installed my opteron windows saw the hardware change on the next bootup and adjusted itself automatically. It found the dual core all on its own and installed the multiprocessor acpi. You can find it under control panel under device manager. Just click on computer and expand it so you can see the acpi. Then right click and select scan for hardware changes to correct it.

Under Computer in device manager, I see "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" I click update drivers and it just searches, then fails.

Under Processors in Device manager, it shows two entries each saying "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+"

What should I do?

EDIT: I did the scan for hardware changes, and I still doesn't update the task manager.

Okay, you will have to force the change...Highlight ACPI Uniprocessor, update driver, at the wizard, select no, not at this time to searching internet, then install from SPECIFIC location (advance), then select DONT search, I will choose driver, with compatible drivers showen, you will get a list of procesor models, selct ACPI Multiprocessor PC and follow thru.

Manually change the driver to multi-processor. I don't remember the prompts, and I don't have XP, but you can do it, something like "show all compatable hardware" then select the multi-processor.

When I follow what you said, I get to the part to choose the ACPI processor and all that shows up is

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface(ACPI) PC
Standard PC

The first one is the one that I have been using. There isn't one that says multiprocessor.

Let me just understand something,

Does this mean that it is only seeing once processor, even though it shows 2 in the device manager (see pic).

Should I just install my Windows x64 Professional that is sitting here instead of trying to get 32 bit working before I move into uncharted territory?
