Which would be better for game performance and over all computer performance? I have XP installed now and I see some jerking in games like Nascar 4, Max Payne. I have some older games that just won't install like Power Poker from EA. Some other things that kind of bug me is the speed of the start menu, programs. I have set the speed in the REG to 0. When I click on the start menu then programs it takes a few seconds to open. I have all the eye candy turned off. In windows 98 it was a lot better. The Jim Sachs fish screen saver has a lot of jerking in it also that I didn't notice in windows 98. I build my system about a month ago and all I have had on this machine is XP. So I thought I would ask the group what they thought before I went through the pain of reformating and starting over with 2000.

Windows XP
AMD XP 1600
768 megs of Cosair DDR Ram
ATI Radeon 64 meg SDR
Soyo Dragon Plus
IBM 60 gig GXP

I doubt you'll have better performance with 2K. In fact, I have one friend who claims his benchmarks went up 15% when he upgraded from 2K to XP. Also, I don't think 2K will be and more backwards compatible than XP.

Windows 2000 is generally better than XP IMO. In your situation, I'd leave it at XP because of all the trouble you'll have to go through just to get rid of some small delays. If you have some money, I'd upgrade that video card of yours. It could be a factor in the jerkiness in games because you have the SDR version. Hope this helps.

I run Nascar Racing 4 and Max Payne and they are flawless here. Something is wrong????

Are you possibly confusing Video card limitations with OS problems...? (I'm not criticizing, just offering the thought)

On a note of personal experience, XP is much better prepared to run out of the box than so many previous versions

of windows. We are all so used to "finishing the job" for M$ after an install, but It seems that the people that

tweak XP the least are the people with the fewest problems......

/me ducks flame throwing 2K tweakers.... Yes it was a good hobby but........ well, that's progress

Well I thought about the video card but it is the same one I used when I was running windows 98 on my other computer and it wasn't jerky on it. Now Nascar didn't run very well because of the P3 450. Another thing that I noticed on this machine is I have a folder called games and one called programs on my desktop that I put my short cuts in. Everytime I open one of the folders you can see the icons refreshing one at a time. I thought that should be faster. Maybe there is something on my system that isn't set right but I wouldn't have a clue to what it would be.

I'm running XP and I get better GL and D3D performance than I got in 98SE or 2K SP2.

It might be something as simple as the drivers for your video aren't happy with XP...

checked for updates at ATI?

I notice the slow desktop redraw once in a while, but that is usually when I close a folder accessed
from the other computer on my network. (handshaking can be slow here???) It might be something
in the way you connect to the internet? (I am pretty clueless about networking)

My only other thought would be is the jerking happening when the CDROM is being accessed? I used to
see that when I played games and listened to music or when I played games requiring the CD and they
changed music tracks. (fixed that with a MoBo driver change... back to XP natives)
