Windows XP or Windows 2000? Thinking of switching

Hello everyone,

I am thinking of switching from Windows XP Professional to Windows 2000 Professional.

Is it worth it?

I am currently using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2, but I use the "Classic" skin, no visual aids.

Aren't I pretty much using Windows 2000?

Is there a security risk in switching?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you want to?
I can't say WinXP does much for me that Win2K doesn't, but there's nothing it doesn't do either, once I turn off the junk(Luna, Security Center, etc).

All around, WinXP is better at some stuff, and not worse at anything(except being annoying, but that can be fixed).

I've been running XP ever since I built my new rig. After using Windows 2000 for three years, I can honestly say that XP rocks. Hasn't crashed once, everything is recognized and installed instantly, looks better than 2k and has some nice features.

All around, I think you should stick to XP if you have the hardware for it (XP need double the amount of RAM than 2k for the same performance).

Hardware is not the problem at all.

It just "feels" like Windows 2000 runs faster and smoother.

Maybe it is just me.

Well... how much RAM do you have? If you have 512MB, Windows 2000 may seem a bit faster and more responsive.

Well... how much RAM do you have? If you have 512MB, Windows 2000 may seem a bit faster and more responsive.

More like "if you have 128MB." Windows 2000 may have a slight advantage over XP for older systems, but on any modern hardware with at least 256MB RAM, XP runs smooth as silk.

OP: Meh...they aren't a ton different. Its probably not worth the hassle. Although, I prefer 2K myself.

Just better driver support.

do a google search to make your start menu faster. all u have to do is make a little change in the registry, restart, then next time u use ur start menu it'll feel like you're on a new pc!

edit: here u go. the place i got it from said to set the value to 0, but i prefer something like 80-100 instead or else it'd be TOO fast.

The default speed of the Start Menu is slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Start->Run regedt32 and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up.

If the speed of the Start Menu is slow, even after using the FAQ above, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties> then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow. You will get much better overall performance on your system.
