Hello,

I have the computer in my signature and I was wondering how much faster it would be to run Windows XP Pro 64 bit instead of 32 bit.

I am asking because I don't have the 64 bit version.

Thanks.

Well if you dont know of anything specifically that will benefit from 64 bit then it wont be faster at all.

I have a machine that has used both XP Pro 64 bit edition and XP Pro 32 bit Edition.

There is no noticeable performance gain or loss in games or applications.

But, I also just used 32-bit applications on the system, save for the 64bit version of 7-zip.

The 64bit version of 7-zip is slightly faster (but not noticeable unless you unzip or zip really large files)

But, I am also a poor college student that does not have 4+ gigs of RAM.

i also have the 64bit version. There is a speed difference in the internet explorer thats 64bit. Mostly it allows for more programs to be run at the same time because of the larger memory that is allowed and accessiable. if you have any other questions about it just ask

Generally you won't notice any difference unless you have workloads which require more than 3gig or so of memory (either seperately or together). If your not, you'd be hard pressed to know if you where on a 32 or 64 bit system without checking.

Sadly, very few plugins work with IE 64

I use IE 32 for microsoft update and FireFox (32) for regular browsing.

XP-64 is based on the 2003 code base, and so incorporates some of its changes, such as changes to SMB. So at least for file sharing roles, there are measurable performance differences between XP-32 and 64-bit.

as it appears to me it is more stable then 32bit xp. there is the driver and some software issue but i believe its faster in the sense you can have more active programs open then 32bit which will allow more productivity

That is the main reason I use XP x64....the simple fact that it's based off of Server 2003 adds to the stability factor of it. I've had it installed since August of last year on my laptop, and it's still as fast as the day I installed it. It also seems as if it doesn't slow down as much if you throw a higher workload at it.
