Ok so I just got a dell XPS about 6 months ago and recently had a harddrive fail so I got that problem fixed and got windows XP PRO installed back on my machine and its asking me to activate this thing once again and of course you can only use them once. Ive tried calling microsoft and told them the whole situation and they wont give me a product key. Does anyone know what to do ? I mean yes I know alternate solutions to fix this problem such as downloading XP PRO CORP but I really dont want to do that. So if anyone wants to help me out that would be great. Also I got some JINGLE in my paypal account for someone that can get me a product key that works. EMAIL me at S4TURBODUB@GMAIL.COM THANKS!

microsoft should allow you to reactivate it. when activating, activate over the phone and explain it is the second time installing it, because of a hard drive failure. i have done it a million times in my old job, and was never a problem. You shouldn't need another product key..they will give you an activation code. I think the key is to activate over the phone when they give you the option(either over the net or phone).

I think jscarrozzo is right. All you should have to do is try activating by phone. I've had to do that before installing Microsoft Office 2003 several times, eventually the internet activation service locks up over multiple installs. So I had to activate it by phone. I think they asked me why I needed to re-install it so much, but after I explained that I had just reformatted my harddrive and re-installed windows they understood and gave me the acdtivation code to enter. P.S. Probably not a good idea to be asking people for product keys on the net, could get you in trouble.

If the product key is still affixed to the case call 1-888-571-2048 and when the CSR asks you the following questions:

[*]Is this the first time you are activating? No
[*]May I ask why......?I had viruses and reinstalled Windows XP
[*]Is it installed on more than one PC? No
[*]Can you read me the product key? Yes (read them back the key)

Here's your 42 digit confirmation code

If for some reason you still get a nub CSR hang up and call back.

One thing you should also do is try to activate where it shows you the product key is invalid and verify that it's the same key that's on your case. Dell typically has a volume license key in their "recovery or operating system" cd's that will fail validation. If the key doesn't match click change product key and try to activate online. If it fails call the number I listed above.

If you reinstalled from the DELL CD you shouldn't have to activate when you reinstall as the Dell installs are preactivated and the key they use is in the winnt.sif file on the CD. Are you installing a Retail version or what because it is obvious you aren't installing from a Dell CD.

yeh, I just reinstalled XP and MCE onto 3 new Dell computers yesterday and none of them asked to activate. I used the Dell CD that came with each PC as well.

Are you using a Dell CD? If your not, then internet activation wont work bt the phone call should work.

That would be a retail product key and there is no way Dell will ever assist you anyhow. Retail XP allows you to install and transfer it to a new computer as long as it is installed on one at a time. You can continue transferring until you no longer wish to use the software. The MS activation people must give you an activation code if it's only installed on one pc.

Please don't be a tool and ask about XP Pro Corp when you supposedly own a legal OS in the first place. Learn how to activate, and please realize that piracy is not tolerated on this forum.

Fix

1 Either Use the Dell CD that came with your computer to do the install (Best)

but if you want a clean XP install without all the dell Crap
You will Need the OG Dell Disc and the retail XP Disc and a Usable computer with a CD Burner

* If your Dell CD does Not have a \i386 Folder and is just an Image file, which some/most are you cannot do this, or will need to find a way to crack into the image file

2 Make a New CD
First Locate the Files UNATTEND.TXT and setupp.ini in $:\i386 folder of either the OG Dell Disc or the Original HDD if you can get even limited acces to it at all

Copy your entire retail disc to a folder on a HDD, (c:\wincd)

Delete \i386\winnt.sif if it exists.

Copy the 2 files from the OG disc above to the \i386 folder Overwrite any existing files.

Use NLite to create an ISO, Burn, Install, should accept your key off the case and activate NP

Optionally you could also copy the Winnt.sif off the Dell disc, and the install will use they master key to install instead of the key off the case

If you bought the XP Pro at CC, then it should have come with the CDkey as well, its retail, so when you call MS, you just tell them its a PC and XP you bought at CC, DONT tell them its a Dell because then they tell you to contact Dell thinking its an OEM version your working with.

Yes, Fish. The story is sounding very fishy as in suspect, doubtful... If you bought a new copy from CC it came with a CD Key and MS won't let you activate it... Very suspicious. I'm not saying you are telling a fib, but it just doesn't compute ( Pun intended ).
