Currently I am running Media Center, but it doesnt handle my current specs mainly the 4 gigs of ram. Plus I do alot of applications at once. Also I am going to be going to school in fall for IT so I am sure I will be running more once school starts. Am I better of getting x64

I run XP media center 2005, I like it just fine, although the SP2 disk it comes is missing a ****** load of files, you actually have to insert the first disk back in

Why is Windows MCE not able to handle your 4 gigabytes of RAM, or multi-task amongst many applications at once?

I have run MCE 2005 on several systems and never noticed this before...

well apparently according to the MoBo since I have 4gigs of ram specifically and I am using 32bit XP it uses 500MB for system purposes, it doesnt do this for any interval of ram below 4gigs though oddly, I love MCE its great, I was just curious if x64 was better fit

I use Windows XP x64 on a somewhat similar system. Windows XP Pro would only see 3GB of RAM on my system. As of right now, I have drivers for everything, including my Gretag Macbeth color management system, but be careful to check compatibility before making the switch. Being able to use the extra RAM in Photoshop (it supports up to somewhere around 2.7GB when run under x64) and still having extra left over for other applications is a wonderful thing if you're a photographer with a high-res DSLR. Depending on the kinds of things that you write programs to do, the extra RAM may be of use to you as well, but either way, it seems that x64 is a bit "snappier" than XP in general multitasking (speculated to be due to the access to additional general purpose registers on the CPU, among other things).

It maps the PCI address space into the upper 4G under the assumption that you'll never actually put 4G of memory into the box. That and on a 32-bit system with 4G of memory there's nowhere 'good' to put those mappings. If your BIOS has an option to remap those addresses and you use a 64-bit OS you'll get access to that memory again. If your BIOS doesn't have that option you're screwed no matter what OS you choose.

Being able to use the extra RAM in Photoshop (it supports up to somewhere around 2.7GB when run under x64)

Only 2.7? You should be able to get 2G of VM in 32-bit Windows with no problems and 3G with a little hackery.

Photoshop is still a 32 bit app, you know. Besides, /3GB is not an option for some of us, who experience all sorts of weird side effects from enabling it (in my case, it made my graphics adapter behave like it was running on generic VESA drivers in 16 bit color). The other advantage of having 2.7GB (over 2GB) and 4GB total (over 3GB) is that plugins can access extra RAM above that, and Window can cache PS scratch file operations in RAM. Overall, Windows XP x64 does indeed give advantages for PS work over XP32 (even with the often ill-behaved /3GB switch).

Yes and if you use the /3G switch and mark the executable large address aware (if it's not already) it should get 3G of VM.

Then I'd probably look for better drivers or a new card. I guess I'm just spoiled by running Linux, all of my apps are OSS and run exactly the same on my 64-bit systems as they do my 32-bit ones.

Yeah, however my NVidia Geforce 6600 (how much more standard or reliable could you get in terms of drivers, other than Intel integrated [puke] graphics?) works just fine otherwise, and given that as a student, my license covers 32 bit or 64 bit XP (whichever I choose), I'd rather take the option that 1)works with all my hardware, 2)isn't an ugly hack, 3) doesn't require wasting lots of money and time to search for something that isn't well documented and just might work right, and 3) allows me to utilize all of my RAM.
