Looking at your configuration, you could install a dual boot with Win x64.

Probably all the 64bit drivers that you need are on that Win x64 CD that you have.

Of course, you will need to update the drivers after inintial bootup.

I am really mad about the TV tuner, I am disappointed about the webcam but I'm not surprised.

If you're interested in having a tv tuner in the Win x64, Dvico has 64bit drivers for its FusionHDTV 5 HD tuner. I hear that it works great.

Is xp pro x64 even worth it? Heard that it's unstable and causes a lot of problems. Hopefully vista will be a totally new change such as windows98 to windowsxp.

Is Win x64 worth it? Sounds like a judgment only you can make.

However, Win x64 is very stable, or at least as stable as Win XP.

I would guess that all the people who don't like Win x64 don't use it or have never used it. Most of the charges that "there are no 64bit drivers" is false with respect to major brand parts. For instance, all the major motherboard manufacturers and all the chipset makers have 64bit drivers.

It is easy to check out. If you have a Athlon 64 CPU based systems, go to your MB website, and confirm that it has 64bit drivers for download.

If you don't have a 64bit CPU but is interested, check out these sources for 64bit driver availability:

UK Gamer 64bit Compatibility site

AMD's Super List of 64bit Drivers

These two lists are not exhaustive. Check the support websites for drivers.

It is true that some of the lesser brands don't have drivers. Only one brand TV tuner maker has official 64bit drivers: Dvico.

Video conferencing with USB webcams is limited because, as far as I can tell, only Creative Lab's Webcam Live and Webcam Instant have 64bit drivers.

However, if you have a miniDV camcorder that can be recognized by Win x64, then you should be able to video conference with MSN Messenger.

So, check out driver availability first before making the committment.

I finally gave up waiting for Canon to produce some x64 drivers for my "old" i850 printer. I went out and purchased a Canon PIXMA iP5200. Hopefully UPS will stop being retards and deliver my printer today. The only other device I'm concerned about is my Hauppauge TV tuner card which supposedly has beta drivers available, but I'll have to steal it back from my fiance's computer where it was relocated to recently.

That's the only thing I know of.

Is there any tangible advantage to using a 64-bit media player? Considering most audio isn't anything more than 24-bit, I can't even see it harnessing even a 32-bit processor.

You're confusing bits. The benefits to a 64bit media player would be all the same benefits as to any other 64bit application; native execution under XP64, more memory access, more GPRs, etc.

That's why I asked if there was any tangible advantage. As it stands now, a media player is a media player and personally I doubt it has much of anything to gain from moving from 32-bit to 64-bit. Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed 64-bit, in fact I run it myself, but it just doesn't seem like you would gain anything from running a 64-bit media player.

I probably am confusing bits of audio and processing bits. Can't say I know much about how digital audio conversion works.

I only asked about the 64-bit media player because I happened to be looking at my processes and noticed the "wmplayer.exe *32" At that time, I began to wonder what I would need to have all of my apps 64-bit.

For instance, I have the following 32-bit processes running:

NMBgMonitor.exe *32 (Nero)
EnMixCPL.exe *32 (Envy sound driver component)
ashDisp.exe *32 (a component of avast!)
wmplayer.exe *32
Rainlendar.exe *32
speedfan.exe *32
Client.exe *32 (Samurize)

I just discovered that ATI has 64bit drivers for the Theater 500 Pro chipsets.

Not only are they for ATI brand tv tuners, but also for other brands using the Theater 500 Pro chips.

Such as

GeCube
Gigabyte
MSI
Sapphire
Tul
Yuan

Looks like they were released on Jan. 18

Now, we can have analog standard TV and digital HD TV on the Windows x64 box. For standard NSTC tv tuners, we have some Hauppauge PVR 15O and now any brand using the ATI Theater 500 Pro tuners.

For digital ATSC HD, we have Dvico's FusionHDTV 5 tuners with drivers downloadable from Dvico's website.

I just went from 1Gb to 2Gb. Huge difference. Even on my Opteron 170 everything runs much faster.

Hmmmm, I'm debating if I should upgrade my 3000+ to an X2 and add another 1G of memory myself

The Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter (version 4) uses the Ralink chip, which has 64bit drivers.

I said, version 4 of the Wireless-G USB adapter. Earlier versions of this USB adapter do not have 64bit drivers.

Also, note well that the drivers from Linksys won't work as Linksys does not have 64bit drivers for any of its wifi products. You need the 64bit drivers from Ralink.

Microsoft implements various OS checks.

1. Mandatory "Activation" upon a complete installation of the OS;

2. Non-mandatory user registration after activation; and

3. "Validation" prior to downloading some kinds of Windows files and updates.

With respect to dual booting with Win XP and Win x64, all of the OS checks are performed independantly. For instance, failure to Activate Win x64 should have no effect on the functioning of an activated Win XP in the same system, and vice versa.

I suspect that you are worried about having the same activation coding in Microsoft's data base of OS Key numbers-to-machine activation code after you install Win x64. In other words, the coding for the same box may show up for one copy of Win XP and one copy of Win x64. I don't know if this actually how it works.

However, I have not read anywhere that this is what happens. In fact, Windows user groups are consistent in reporting dual boots without issues that you describe.

So, you should be able to update Win XP after installing Win x64.

That just made my day. I have 2 versions of 64 bit linux in the mail as well. I know the drivers and software are lagging but I am exited.
$12 eh? I'm assuming you got the trial version, in which case keep in mind the 120 day limit.

pfh limits, I ordered a version of server 2003 enterprise edition and all you have to do is reformat and it still works, theres no such thing as a limit unless they time-bomb your product key.

Confession of a x64 Pro user:
Admittedly, I had my doubts before deciding to venture with the x64, and after when I first started using it. Since then there have been over two months now, things seem to be in for the better. Sure there were moments during those past two months that I did seriously reconsider going to xp Pro and dump this piece of c#&p. Well, very much what I wanted it to do for me, whether playing an on-line game, burned a dvd copy, or video capturing etc. It did it well and yes, relatively fast too, or faster than the other 32 bit machine I own.
Things do hiccup however, especially more so with 64 than 32 but that's expected. My last recent unpleasant experience was the C.L. Audigy 2 ZS, 64 bit signed driver upgrade hiccup.
Knowing this product in its infancy phrase, so patience is the keyword. Well I always wanted to add a hdtv tuner to my rig but there were no mfgs out there offering their product in 64 bit version. So today I did send Kworld an email asking whether their ATSC pci tuner had x64 driver, well they got back with me quickly, saying yes, but it is only a Beta, well, it's better than nothing. So today on my way home from work, I'm going to stop by Fry's to pick it up and try it tonight.
Just some thoughts i wanted to share...Until then.

If Kworld's 64bit drivers for its ATSC hd tuner works, then it will be the second ATSC tuner with 64bit drivers. The other is Dvico's FusionHDTV 5.

Color management folks take note: GretagMacbeth has released a new version of Eye-One Match that has 64 bit drivers for devices such as the Eye-One Display 2, Eye-One Photo, etc.

Available here

No more dual booting XP Pro and copying over monitor profiles to x64, yay!

Just like to add how much I like this OS.. It reminds me of the old days of NT 4.0.. When everyone else was using 98se.. Properly configured, its a dream. I just hope they don't bloat it with "user-friendly" features.. *cough*vista*cough*
