Windows XP Screen Saver won't start

Just recently, my screen saver won't activate in Windows XP. I have it set up for screen saver, then monitor shutoff a little while later, but neither happen. Anyone know how I might go about troubleshooting and fix it?

The quickest way to fix, is to restore the system on a time when it used to work perfectly.

Can you still click Preview and view the SS? I've seen certain USB devices and mouse/keyboards cause this problem. As a test set the SS to 1 min and the power saving scheme to turn off the monitor after 2 min. Now you can disconnect everything and see what happens.

As I read your gear, you have a Dell LCD monitor. You really should not use a screen saver with an LCD. It does not "save" burning your backlight or inverter, and the LCD does not burn in a screen image. The best setting is to have the LCD off or asleep when not in use. So, the only purpose would be entertainment, but you eventually will pay a price with a shorter backlight life.

corkyg, I now realize that your reply was aimed at the OP but it applies to me as well. I run a simple screensaver on my Dell 18" LCD (1800FP) because I enjoy the mesmerizing Matrix code and not to conserve my backlight. This LCD is over 4 years old and I've never had a problem. If my LCD croaks I'll purchase a bigger and badder one to replace it with.

This happened to me on about the same day. From my research, I believe this to be an automatic update from Microsoft for my Office products.

I have half a dozen LCDs here at the hospital with burn in of the hospital logo which is the desktop background. HP1902 is the model. But when you're a 24/7/365 operation, that's what happens no matter what kind of screen.

OK, John - you fit my one justification for using a SS on a LCD - entertainment. And that is a greatr justification. I do it myself now and then - but not when I am not around to enjoy it.

BTW - if you like something mezmerising, try Organic Art - it is fascinating - 3D moving images using fractals.

No screen saver works, but the monitor will not go into standby. I have my PC on pretty much 24/7 since I run a teamspeak server on it for friends, and also a basic file server for access to some files when on the road.
