I just recently moved my main computer to using Windows XP and I am having some very strange problems with sharing where I could get Windows 2000 to work.

I can not access my other computer..which also has XP..if I am not running as admin on my main machine. I can see the machine but i am told that I dont have permissions to access the computer..

If I log on as admin then I have no problems at all

I can't even access c$ unless I am admin and when I am admin, I am not prompted to input the password to access c$

I think this is very very strange

Enable the Guest account on both computers and see if that fixes your problems. To enable guest goto user accounts in control panels and click on enable guest.

No, don't enable the guest account that's a bad idea (sorry Utterman ). The problem is probably that you're using a blank password when not using admin, or that the "regular" account you're using doesn't exist on the other account. The ideal solution is to make sure that your user accounts on either computer exist on the other if you need to access the other.

e.g.

Computer A
User: Administrator Pass: 12345 -> can access both computers over a network
User: DeRusto Pass: 1234 -> can access both computers over a network
User: FriendDeRusto Pass: <blank> -> can't access either computer over network

Computer B
User: Administrator Pass: 12345 -> can access both computers over a network
User: DeRusto Pass: 1234 -> can access both computers over a network
User: FriendDeRusto Pass: <blank> -> can't access either computer over network

Of course you can enable blank passwords over the network through the security policy settings (you actually would have to disable the setting for "Allow blank passwords for interactive logon only" or something like that). However, using blank passwords is a bad idea in general.

Hope this addresses your problem, post back if I'm off.

Thanks, this solves my problem.. but does that mean that I have to have an account on every computer that I want to access??
