Windows XP SP2 Deployment Issues

Figured I would ask you guys in case you encountered the issue.

Most of our machines are various levels of IBM Thinkpads that have (A30, A31, R40, R51...) but we are having some sporadic issues with a few different models after the SP2 install. After you log into the machine, the desktop is loaded partially then you recieve a BSOD with 0x00008e. That is a "memory can't be read" error. Ram is not an issue and this has occurred in about half a dozen different A30, A31 and R40 machines so far.

The only fix I have found is to update every driver along with the BIOS and Embedded controler. Only after that, does everything seem to be kosher. When scanning through the IBM driver matrix for these machine types, there is various hardware similar between the models. One of which is the Audio drivers that do state the fixes made in the recent driver files is "Windows XP SP2 support". Yet, when I update only the audio drivers, the machine still blue screens. It's only when I update everything does all things seem Kosher.

I wouldn't complain too much but this is very difficult to do when these machines reside in other offices and take about an hour or 2 per machine to fix. I really feel like I am just grasping at straws here and would like to nail it down further, but I don't have time to troubleshoot this completely since we are pushing forward with the rollout.

Anyone experience this issue with the Thinkpad or any other soundmax enabled laptop (if it truely is the sound's fault)?

I've had some sporadic issues with older applications and XP SP2. I would run memtest just to be sure usually, but the problem seems a bit to uniform and is occuring on mulitple machines so that isn't likely the cause.

What is the same about all these machines? Anything besides the sound? Try disabling that all together in the bios. If the problem goes away, you know its the sound and you can troubleshoot it further. If it doesn't, you won't waste time barking up the wrong tree.

Check your video drivers. Also do any of these machines have IBM's security chips in them? You need to make sure the drivers for them are up to date before putting on SP2.
