Hi guys,
its been a long time since I've posted, turns out I need some help.
I built my PC about a year ago, maybe less, everything was fine up until I got some nasty viruses. Last week I backed up all my data and decided to reinstal windows. Everything went fine, I reformatted the harddrive with NTFS, windows copied the setup files to the HD, windows rebooted the pc and went to the installation, then at the installation screen, I get the following error message-

**********
Fatal Error:

One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

A component's file does not match the verification information present on the component manifest.

**********
Reading the error log, it reads:

**********
Error: SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\1386\asms\10\MSFT\Window\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.

Installation failed: D\1386\asms

Error Message: A component's file does not match the verification information present on the component manifest.

*********

Okay, so that was about one week ago. Unfortunately, right after I got the error message, I had to leave the house shortly for vacation. So I took the notes, powered down the PC, and left. Last night I returned home, with intentions to try installing Windows once agian. I reformatted the drive agian, same thing happens, gets to the same point, then same error message. Ive retried it 5 times, still no luck. Ive searched all over the database on Ms's support site, cant seem to come accross anything. I have no idea where to go now. Any suggestions?

Thanks a bunch in advance.

Are you using a Genuine Windows CD?

I suppose possibly the disc is damaged so one of the files isn't copying right.

It's not clear - are you using a slipstreamed XP w/SP2? If so, has it been used successully before? It could be a faulty integration.

A good rule of thumb for SP2 is to have a fairly clean system - remove peripherals such as printers, etc.

I am very familiar with your problem. If you can answer a couple questions I think I can help you out.

Are you installing from a 'backup' CDR or your original XP CD?

If using a CDR do you have the 'image' file for that on your hard drive?

Do you have more than one CD drive in your computer?

I'll bet we can get you passed this.

Looking through several dozen cases of this that have been called into MS...

All were resolved by using a different CD, CD-rom drive, or copying flats to the hard drive and running setup from there.

1- boot to CD
2- F10 to cancel current upgrade
3- enter to setup windows
4- F8 for license agreement
5- R for repair
- it will say that it is already in the middle of upgrading to xp, do you want to
retry the upgrade or do a clean isntall? -
6- retry the upgrade

I have a similar situation, unfrotunately computer won't even boot anymore............

Tried to install SP2 cd..........(it already had XP on it but user never kept "updates" going)...........online "windows update" would only download *some* of the updates. So then, decided if it wouldn't do SP2 online, I'd just use the cd.

Got the cd rollin.......(yes to update, yes to install, etc. etc.)........checked on it after a few minutes, SP2 was installing fine, then about when I figured it should be done I came back and.............

Now it just loops to the boot 'options' screen.........(safe, safe w/ prompt, etc.).

And it won't boot in ANY mode. When I use an XP cd to do the "repair" install, it can't find a previous version of windows..........(WTF?)..........now it looks like I'm stuck to format/reinstall only?????????????
