Windows XP startup lag after Windows update. Please help.

My friend's computer, which I've been configuring for a while has had some really weird problems.

It is a Mobile 2500+ XP on a Asus a7n8x-x series motherboard. With a Seagate 7200.7 200GB IDE HDD, 2 DVD drives (1 writer), a Maxtor 40 gig, and a geforce 2 mx400.

The weird thing is after a fresh install of windows XP service pack 1 everything is fine. Everything is smooth and fast just like it should be. I update the windows updating tool and the first few updates. That is fine.

Then when I update the GMI tools along with about 15 other updates I get this really bad lag at startup in which if I go to my computer I get that browsing flashlight that looks swings as if it's looking for the drives. If I go to explorer and try to click the tab that lets me see the URL's I've manually entered it freezes the explorer. However certain programs work, even if they use internet, such programs include MMORPG Ragnarok Online. This happened before I installed a fresh copy of XP sp 1 also.

Before my friend had a SP1 configuration, then it was updated to SP2, everything worked fine. Then some SP2 updates AFTER the 80meg SP2 update was installed. Then again I had this queer startup lag. Everything would not load or work at the start, if I tried to use CPUZ to look at my stats it would not work, my media player BSplayer would not load. Explorer would not go to any webpages, and if i looked at the history URL manual tab it'd freeze, and most of all when i go to my computer it shows the dumb flashlight.

However for both of these instances of problems after about 5-10 minutes everything will work, no more flashlight at my computer. This is very troublesome and this promotes this computer never being able to be shut down due to the 10 minute startup lag. I really don't know what is wrong, originally I thought it was because I updated BIOS, not so. Then I thought it was the Asus Probe, not so. Now I find that it is the Windows Update, it's a certain update I think, because most of the updates work it's only one or 2 that is causing the startup lag.

Oh yeah, the only way to remove this startup lag so far is to fresh install. Even though i created a restore point when the system was fine (without security updates from windows update), and restored it to that point the my computer/explorer startup lag still exists. Even if i update to before any updates, same result. So this thing lingers in the system even after uninstalling the updates that caused it.

I've reinstalled this OS about 4 times now, and I would really like to be able to have security updates for it without the startup lag creation. I've also ordered a disc from Microsoft for SP2, hopefully that will solve this.

Other: Other info that might help, I run Zone Alarm, and Norton Antivirus 2003. During the laggy startup when i do ctrl alt delete, the system shows that 99% of the CPU is being used for System Idle Process. Therefore the system is doing nothing....

Did you try uninstalling GMI tools? Seems like your problem started with that. What is the process running that is causing your 99% CPU?

I already tried system restoring to no updates, same problem.

GMI tools also gets removed by that restore.

System Idle Process, is taking 99% CPU, (which is basically what the CPU does while doing nothing)

I found somewhere that the exact same problem was caused by the Video Card drivers.

I currently have the same problem, and I'm looking for a solution also...

I had a similar problem for a while with my computer after I bought a new hard drive, and I attributed it to having 2x IDE hard drives, 2x Optical drives, and 1x SATA drive all connected at the same time, but for some reason, whether it was something I did unintentionally or whatever, it eventually worked itself out.
