XP Home rig started acting up - beginning with asking for a password (did not have one before). This happened only once because at re-boot, the PC just bsods after you see the Windows XP screen (with the flashing bar indicating OS is loading).
Thinks I've tried to troubleshoot:
Ultimate Boot CD NTFS reader shows that all files are still there. Did a Seagate diagnostic and no errors were found. There are files in this HDD that makes it worth the effort to try to retrieve it - not a life or death kinda deal but it's would be a pain in the arse to replicate the most recent stuff (got back-ups but it's not up to date).
I Googled this to find out what solutions fixed it and for those that were fixed, it was a registry edit (deleting sptd.sys) that did the trick. Only problem I have is I can't even open the drive to do any sort of registry hacking nor can I even view it's contents when it's made a slave drive.
Any hints / solutions to get even to open this HDD will be most appreciated - THANKS!
Thinks I've tried to troubleshoot:
- Boot to Safe Mode or Last Good Working . . no dice - bsod. Safe Mode with command prompt stops at "Hit Escape to skip loading sptd.sys" - this only results in the same bsod.
- Tried Windows Recovery console by booting to XP disc - no dice - hitting 'R' to load recovery console results in the same bsod.
- Changed Power Supply - maybe it was going bad . . no dice
Slaved this HDD to another PC with NTFS loaded (tried my Win2K rig and another XP rig) - same f_ing bsod. Of course boot drive is the 'resident' drive, not this unit
- Hooked up the HDD (Seagate Barracuda 120GB IDE) to an external USB enclosure - machine boots fine - sees the HDD - but bsods the host PC the moment you try to explore it.
- Slaved this HDD to a Win98 rig - did not crash the Win98 but drive cannot be read - because it's NTFS?
