I just installed W2K and I cant find anywhere to install the monitor ICM and INF files. No monitor entry in device manager! No "change" button in display settings under monitor tab? How do I change to my PF790 rather than "plug and play" monitor? I dont want to worry about my refresh rates getting screwed when switching resolutions. thanks in advance.

try doing this. Goto start, setting, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, double click on monitor, then double click on the monitor below the monitor title and see if that works

Just a shot in the dark, but you might want to try logging in as Administrator.

This may sound weird, but try changing your video driver temporarily to something. Then see if you can change monitor.
Hope something helps

As long as the monitor is PNP, w2k retrieves the settings from the monitor, and there's a configuration setting (ON is the default) that hides refresh rates/screen resolutions that the monitor is incapable of using.

Well I am using a radeon 64 mb vivo with beta video drivers. That seemed to be the problem. So I installed the official ATI drivers and now I can adjust my monitor properties and there is an monitor entry in my device manager. But I still cant seem to install the ICM and INF I downloaded from viewsonic. Thank you fro all the responses. Now I just got to figure out how to get windows to see these files. I unzip them into my documents and when I go to update drivers from device manager and browse to my doc they are not there? I believe I have the folder to show all files? hmmmm...

Hmmm, as a fellow Viewsonic user, the drivers and stuff I got from their site automatically unzipped into my Winnt\system32\ something directory. So, I just updated monitor driver by doing hte usual stuff and pointing it in the direction of the system32 directory. Specifically, the ICM files are under \system32\spool\drivers\color, and the INF files are under winnt\inf\
hope this helps even a little

Nicowju,I will try that, thanks. Another question for you? I think I almost had it installed correctly and then I went to device manager and I had two monitors- PF790 and default monitor? But I still could not get my comp to recognize my proper refresh rates for my monitor? I have to set them manually in windows 2000 whenever I change resolutions? I must be doing something wacky here? I know windows 98 would have an optimal setting once I installed my monitor. Will windows 2000 also show an optimal setting? I am fearful of going to high on a refresh rate and damaging my monitor.

Hmmm I'm not sure about that. It should recognize the available refresh rates (check again in Display Properties). Win2K when switching resolutions (with my setup anyway) always seems to go to 60Hz refresh rate if its a never before used resolution or color depth at a certain resolution. Quite odd and annoying, but does that.
