Windows98se - AVI files requiring many attempts to open?

I've been having this thing where .avi files are taking me multiple tries to get them to open and play regardless if I use double clicking or right click and then play. This doesn't happen for me with any other file type.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to remedy this situation?

What app are you using to play them?

Have you checked your system for viruses?

Update your codec or get "The Playa" from www.divx.com . I've found it plays more avi files than WiMP (which sucked after 6.4)

I think he's saying that the AVIs play, they just take several double-clicks to get them to play.

check for viruses regularly.

plays everything fine, just takes several attempts about 95% of the time to get the avi files to start.

I've noticed it takes a couple tries occasionaly. Not as often as you say, but more frequently If i've just stopped one avi and try to play a new one. Im pretty sure the avi files that have that problem are divx compresssed.
