Windows XP RC 2 installed on my HTPC second partition, running fine!! But couple of drivers are still missing.

First is DLINK wireless (Atheros) - I am not able to find any version though "under development" is indicated.

Second is AverMedia Tuner card - I could not find any information on it. I am thinking about installing media portal!!

Any pointer/help is appreciated. Thanks

To my knowledge, none of the TV tuner companies have 64bit drivers out yet, their wares are a small part of the market, so they're dragging their feet rather than taking any sort of risk.

The mobo drivers you're using, do they even support the nForce 4? The notes on Nvidia's site don't mention any nForce4 stuff, just the nForce3, so it's entirely possible that they're a build that doesn't include "finished" nForce4 support. Of course, this opens up a ton of possibilities if this is the case, since the problem could be in either how the "northbridge" itself is controled, or just the on-chip NIC. Have you tried using the other NIC on your board as your primary NIC?

I was able to get 60 seconds of internet on the NVIDIA NIC, and then switching my CAT5 cable to the Yukon NIC did not give me internet at all, but both give me network file access to my server, very weird.

I thought the NVIDIA BETA drivers would not support NForce 4 as well but i cannot even get the ASUS ones to work, the NIC did not work till i used NVIDIA's from Nov. Very strange cause the Nforce4 is so new the ASUS drivers should be more up to date than NVIDIA's.

Looking at Asus' site, the driver version there is 6.09(whereas NV's are 6.25), so I'm not shocked you didn't have much luck with Asus'. This comment about your file server is interesting though, do you have a home network of some sort? And if so, can you see the router even after you can't see the internet?

This is ticking me off, too. Just port the damned software already. If all I'd get was functionality in x64 I'd be happy, I don't need anything extra, at least not initially.

Where did you get that from? There's new Beta 4 drivers based on Catalyst 5.2 for ATI cards.

My WinTV/FM is USB.... you would think that would be easy as pie to do a driver update for.

Anyone know anything about how a TBSC is supported by WinXP x64? I have one on the way, I'd like to use it when I migrate to x64 for good.

Latest convo with Leadtek regarding WinXP x64 drivers for their TV tuners:

-----Original Message-----
From: Megatomic[mailto:]

To: Leadtek Service
Subject: Poor WinXP x64 Edition support

This is inquire mail

Ask from Mister Megatomic
Subject : Poor WinXP x64 Edition support
Content : Dear Sir or Madam,

I am just writing to you to express my disappointment with Leadtek's support for WinXP x64 Edition. With the final release imminent (it is on Release Candidate 2 now), there is absolutely no work being done on drivers for my Leadtek TV tuner products. I own 2 of them and neither will work when WinXP x64 Edition is released.

I understand that Leadtek might now want to provide beta drivers to the general public, but according to one of your tech support reps. (patwhay) no work is being done yet. All the rest of the components in my computer have quite mature WinXP x64 drivers.

Please, it is important to me to get drivers for my tuners, I actually them to capture video semi-professionally. I don't want to have to reinvest my money to buy new cards to do this.

Regards,
Megatomic

And the reply:

Dear Sir,

Good day!

It's me again......

If had any news as you request, we will inform you.

Thank you for your kindly.

Best Regards

Leadtek Service

So it looks like Leadtek has a one man tech support dept., this is the same guy I got last time I submitted this complaint/request.

Well oddly enough I booted in XP 64 last night and was able to connect to the internet for 20 minutes no problems. But the weird thing is when I first installed RC2 and lost the internet connection I rebooted and that didn't work.

Alright, just 2 questions...

1. if I install this, can I rollback to regular XP Pro without too many complications,

2. Is there any actual performance enhancement with installing the 64 bit version? Or is it more like a look and see the future type of deal?

edit: It's a fresh install, new system I just build, using XP Pro as my OS

1. I don't think so since you have to boot to install, there is not an upgrade path.

2. the windows tidbits during install say there are performance benefits just by using XP 64. Not the look of the future the only difference is the splash screen saying Win XP 64.

Its kind of like when XP first came out and you had to decide if it was worth upgrading to from Win2K... Win2K can do almost anything XP could initially but the eye candy. In this case there is no eye candy, but just a look into the future of operating systems to come, with some small performance gain, a lot of BS getting drivers (Which if you were around when Win2K was developed it lacked a whole crapload of driver support as well).

If you are looking for U320 performance from your U160 hard drives kinda performance boost, just forget it and keep what you have. Its just an interesting change of pace for many of us whom are bored with business as usual, install it and forget it, point and shoot, 32bit computing.

There is sort-of rollback. I installed XP-64 as a second OS on the same partition as my regular drive, just a new folder. So I created "c:\Win64" instead of c:\Windows, and it uses c:\Program Files (x86) instead of the usual c:\Program Files.

I was able to boot to both oses, and everything seemed to be running fine. Only potential issues that the user profiles are stored in the shared c:\Documents and Settings\...it seems to keep the accounts seperate, but I'm not really sure which profiles are mapped to which accounts. (I have domain accounts as well as local accounts).

Steam ran, as did Firefox (32) w/o "installing" them, but no luck on Unreal Tournament. (I haven't bothered reinstalling it, yet).

edit: To clarify: I tried to run my existing install of UTK2K4, w/o installing it to the 64 bit OS, and that's why it failed. If I "install" it, I'm sure it would work. My concerns would be what impact the reinstall would have on my regular OS, and performance hits (based on article posted on Anandtech.

I have been using XP64 for close to a month now as my main and only os and it is great. I play UT a lot with no problems at all.

UT2K4 plays very well on x64. And you should have no problem getting driver support for most gaming hardware. ATI and NVidia both have active beta development, so does Creative and Realtek.

Gaming is great for me on my machine. Specs in sig.

Anyone install other games besides UT2004? Can you install games like Farcry, HL2, or Dawn of War?

HL2 works fine. FarCry might as well wait for the 64 bit version to hit although I believe it works also.

Up for my edited post...also, see the linked article on AT...are you UT players seeing real-world performance impact?

I have only played farcry on my machine. It runs good in x32 mode. I am also waiting for the x64 patch to come out. But what I really need is a new videocard though, my geforce 5200ultra is not cutting it. I was going to wait and get a pci-e card, but I'm getting tired of waiting for socket 754 pci-e mobo's to come out. I think I may just get a geforce 6600gt agp and save up for an big upgrade next year.

Woodie, the only reason it doesn't run now is because the CD key and a couple other pieces of info aren't in the XP64 registry that are in the XP32 registry, since they're inserted upon install. There's a tool out there that will let you fix this, otherwise you can just copy the UT2K4 registry tree out of your XP32 install, and import it in to your XP64 install. Any of these options(including a reinstall) will have no impact on UT2K4's performance under XP32.
