This is most likely because the virus programs dont know how to communicate with the Security Center yet. I would expect vendors to be releasing software updates by the time the SP is finalized.

Remind me again how Microsoft is as secure as Novell.....geee thats right it isnt! Novell is the best for Directory services, Microsoft cant touch them and they know it, AD is based on the novell "tree" setup.
Dont knock the most secure and stable NOS around....

That really isnt relevant, since this is a service pack for XP. Whichever NOS and directory serivice is the most stable and secure makes no difference.

Great, didn't MS make a statement at some point that SPs would not contain any new features? I know it was a while ago but enough of their customers complained about the mixture of features and fixes, I know it really bugs me.

You're correct.

MS simply realized that they couldn't keep that promise.

In this case, however, the features added by SP2 are deeply, sorely needed. Would you rather wait for the next OS release to get these features, or get them in a service pack?

I understand this is the "preview" release candidate 1, but I don't see a "build" or version number. I installed a beta version 2082 about a month ago on one box.

Can somebody tell me what the version number is?

I would rather they were a seperate download so they were optional.

I just downloaded it in less than 10 minutes and it installed without any problems. I don't know what it does but I just like installing new things

Does anyone know how to uninstall it if I have system restore off? Even after opening port 21 and giving program access to my FTP server, turning off the firewall, etc, people can't connect to my FTP server.

I don't see anything in there on how to uninstall it, just tech support notes. Shrug.

If I go to control panel-add/remove programs there is a box at the top of the window that says, "Show Updates". Tick that and go all the way to the bottom of the list of programs and you should find RC1 waiting to be uninstalled.

I realy like the IE enchancements like the control of plug ins and java and activeX ect. athough I have a feeling that I will still want more. And I can only hope that it is a real at the core popup blocker that blocks core comands and not site by site and search method. Also I wonder if anything has been added to prevent hijacking or window modification like adds without the toolbars or anyhitng like that and stuff. I realy hate the not displaying some images part though as it just alsways removes images I actualy want to see and at random even some of these forum buttons.

The firewall seems nice and I hope it is quite configurable, but wont distrupt everything like other software firewals i've tried.

Don't like the big Automatic Updates screen just on principal, wonder if they changed the licence agreement regarding the updates or I still won't use them.

I would like to see somehting like varous password support like different and varous strenth passwords for local logon, remote logon, screen saver lock logon and scheduled task logon (maybe even by task type). Doubt I will see any of this though.

I know I want a lot. I wonder what I will get.

Will this affect the other machines on my home network? Will they quit seeing each other?

I'm pretty sure that the ports used for file and printer sharing (TCP 139, 445 UDP 137, 138) are disabled by default in SP2. They are listed in the exceptions list (control panel, windows firewall, exceptions tab), so you would need to check that box to enable F&P sharing.

The same also goes for remote desktop, IIRC. It's in the firewall exceptions list, but not checked.

Looks like the servers are not as busy.
Just downloaded the file in 13min10sec at 354KB/sec
using TimeWarner Cable Roadrunner.

I am now having a problem with Outlook 2002. It hangs now when trying to access my second pop mail account. Anyone else having this problem.
