Wine bar customer writes expletive on $300 check to protest $6 service charge

I don't eat out very often for many reasons but i would not be happy either for a extra fee for the waiters heath insurance. that should be the restaurants duty unless they screw with their hours so they don't have to offer it for them (unless this was just so they server doesn't have to pay as much from their check to get it, and still why should the customer be paying this?) for a no skill job servers and waitress's make decent money, 20% of 300 to take them their items they ordered and possibly take care of the dirty dishes after? come on we don't need forced tips and forced health insurance gotcha moments when you get the bill. "covid surcharge" lulz

So she adds a charge to a bill so people know she is giving health care to employees? It’s a cost of doing business. You will attract better staff which will lead to better results. Seems stupid to make it an additional charge to people unless you really really need attention.

no skill? Yeah eat a bag of dicks OP.

Fuck that, I'm with the person in the article.

I would have had no problem if the prices of my drinks went up 2% to cover it and it was hidden in the cost, but to add that blatant "fee", fuck that noise.

I am a good tipper and eat at nice restaurants pretty much every night when I am on vacation, and there is nothing that grinds my gears more than having a pre-designated fee added to my bill. I will gladly pay it and they pretty much always disclose it on the menu prior, some sort of service fee/charge, however if I do get that automatic service fee, they get $0 extra.

Chances are if they didn't automatically add a charge, my tip would have been more than the automated service charge.

If it's well advertised as something you do, then I can see a benefit to itemizing it as an extra charge on the bill. However, if it just showed up on the bill as a surprise, I find that tacky.

I'd probably remove the fee and just figure the cost into the overall cost of the meal. Literally every other employer that pays their employees benefits does not list it as a charge on an itemized receipt for the customer to see lol. It's just human nature that when someone sees that on their bill that it might irk them, although most of us would not have a conniption fit over it.

They should just build it into the menu prices instead of stupid fees.

But to insult the hard work of restaurant workers with a dismissive no skill comment, OP is a schmuck.
gotta love how my opinion has ruffled so many feathers. what skills does it require? The #1 thing i want is to take my order correctly and check on me a min after receiving the order to make sure i don't need a fork or sauces / food is made correct. refills and stuff is nice but ...

im curious would these skills be greater than a mailman or bus driver?

No skill job? It's a skill putting up with people who think it's a worthless, no skill job...
yea you think putting up with someone's opinion is a skill!

well its strange, like someone people are going to be super pissed but then some people are going to feel to awkward to want to bring up not wanting to pay for someone's health care. Then maybe someone like me that i have to be put in that situation to begin with! i don't want to complain about it but i don't want to have to deal with it either. like someone else said if it was listed somewhere with a fine print *** then id be like Ohhh ok you got me..

How do you guys feel about a PPE surcharge from a car dealer service department? My Subaru dealer charges a couple bucks extra on each service invoice.

When he objected, muttering about “socialism,” she removed the 2 percent charge — about $6 — from his bill. She also offered to remove the 20 percent service charge, but he let that remain. Then in signing the check, he wrote a big zero with a slash through it on the tip line and added an expletive phrase that begins with “F” and ends with “You.”

Complete asshole. That's the customer. If you agree that he customer was justified in acting like an asshole, you are an asshole.

Grownups (unlike assholes who probably are used to McDonalds are Chickafill or whatever bullshit chain restaurant) who are not assholes understand that in many places that, when a bill exceeds a certain amount, gratuity is automatic.

Restaurants do this because "assholes" try and skimp on tip once all the shit they ordered adds up to larger amounts.

As for gratuity, anyone who is not an asshole understands that "tips" are still a thing in many parts of the country and that your little debate that you had on the internet about tips belongs on the internet, not when you are in a restaurant getting ready to pay the bill. People who are not assholes learn about whether a restaurant has a tipping policy or auto gratuity prior to making a reservation.
As for the "fee", only an idiotic asshole would say the word "socialism" when in a private business decided to include an additional fee on a bill to make a statement about private industry not offering private health insurance to private employees. Especially when that fee is declared everywhere. Declared by the private business owner who decided to offer private health insurance to her private employees.

"Since opening, Apéro has explained the service and health charges on its website, on its menus and on Resy, an online reservation site"

So what exactly is the problem here?
Some jackass walked into a wine bar without reading anything on the menu or the website, ran up a $300 bill and then had a temper tantrum where he is cursing out people?

Maybe some of you people should stick to your crappy frozen pizzas from Costco.

Am I making a mistake by reading the article?

If the dealer includes a PPE fee during a pandemic. When the Pandemic is over the fee is no longer justified. The fee disappears.
If a dealer raises pricing overall to cover PPE during a pandemic, do you honestly think they are going to lower prices once the pandemic is over?

Every time you patronize a business, you are paying for someone's healthcare. Sounds like you might need to just buy a cabin in the mountains and live off the land.

You are truly a dbag of giant proportions. You think restaurant work is like no work. Lots of work is lower skill but is plenty of work. People like you are the worst. But we already knew that by your posting history.

And the guys laying tile should also get paid more for sure. But in the US in most states waiters are paid less than minimum wage and tips are where all their wages are from. Only an idiot doesn't know this.

Also, a key way dbags try to belittle good honest work is by pitting blue collar workers against other blue collar workers by implying they are overpaid instead of just being honest and saying a lot of work is just underpaid. Just terrible people.

i didn't say it was like no work. i said that table he waited on was very little work. guess what among other jobs i was a waiter before. i would bring home 300$ in cash everyday and barely broke a sweat. i was 100% thinking i got paid to much for what i did. the biggest issue is how many hours you get, so things like calling off or requesting a day off might change your next weeks schedule too.

Can you please show me multiple receipts where "healthcare" is listed as a line item for what you are paying? I've never been to a restaurant where I'm paying for "healthcare" for their employees.

Let's take this a step further. I've worked as a consultant for Fortune 50 companies. Never have I once seen my billable hours include 'healthcare' as part of the charges.

I'm ready to buy a cabin!
