Hmmm Wing Commander 1+2 along with a few other PC games of this era (EOB, D&D Gold Box) are what got me hooked on PC gaming and hardware. WC1 with the Speech Packs were the first video games of any kind that I can recall had real actual voice acting with a SoundBlaster card.

What is joystick support on these like? I have an old MS Sidewinder Pro with FF that worked great last I checked, but it's been years.

same here, one of my favorite games of all time. Sadly, I don't game anymore.

Still remember those 2 button joysticks with the trigger button up top for WC and Star Wars games.

Since I lost all my floppy disks of ancient games, maybe I should hoard these!

I'd love to play a Wing Commander game with today's tech. Playing such a great game, with 2-decades old graphics would only disappoint me.

Some games are still playable with their original, dated graphics and sound, but for me, I don't think the WC series is one of those sort of games. Same goes for the X-Wing series.

I'll wait patiently for Star Citizen.

That's the worst one of the bunch (although it had the best game engine - go Matrox M3D!).
Actually playing through Privateer 2 right now. Finished Privateer 1 last week.

Worst of the bunch when it came to storyline, but the graphics were quite good and the gameplay was fun until it got monotonous. It seemed like that game had 1000 missions you had to finish to advance to each new plot tidbit.

I bit on this but then realized JUST how bad the graphics from WC1 and WC2 were. At points I can't tell if the ships are coming or going.

A newer alternative with a decent storyline is Freespace: The Great War. Its graphics aren't as good as prophecy but they are certainly better than WC3.

Freespace 2 has a great open source community that's released much-improved graphics along with a new game engine. Both are available on GOG's as well.

Of course, Wing Commander Saga: Darkest Dawn is free, and pretty modern, graphics-wise.

It's fan-made freeware, but should hold Wing Commander fans until Star Citizen.

Thanks for that! It brings back the good old Wing Commander names and feel. After I spent about 10 minutes playing I was thinking that it look JUST like a freespace clone, then I realized it's running on the open source engine. Really neat.
