thanks.

Actually, Wininit.exe is a program in the windows system. Not a virus. Most likley, another program added it to your registry boot section. To view the files that load on boot, goto Start-->Run--> and type msconfig. That will bring up a config window, and you goto the tab marked "Startup". It will list all the programs that load on startup. You can check or uncheck anything you want, just make sure you leave System Tray and Explorer. I hope I was some help. Thanks.

Ps - If it's not in there, check your startup folder, and if not in there, goto c:\windows\all users\start menu\programs\startup\, it might be listed in there.

i want to say thanks also because i may try this!
this is the letter i was typing earlier:
first of all, my friend is an idiot (so what does that make me?)... he downloads all of this crazy m.u.g.e.n. stufff onto his computer, clicks on all the letters he gets with his hotmail--yes! even those stupid "make money while standing on your head!" letters

but is one of my few friends that i can loan money to(he actually pays me back!), so i'd like ask members here to help me help him out

what he's running (other than stupid mugen progs): win 98se--i think he has (i installed) all the critical updates--will check--just thought of that
innoculate it (i downloaded and installed this, because i knew he was a moron--another story involving another virus--funlove)
zonealarm(ditto)

specs:
k6-2 450 with 192 (188) mb
30 gig maxtor installed with original hd
broadband access

what's been done so far: i've updated it pro and run virus scan, catching one to two infected files almost every time (last night ran it twice--even after restart--second time nothing), read mr. harvey's post about the kournkova virus and disabled windows scripting as outlined in the directions in the link

the symptoms: everytime windows comes up after shutdown or reboot, dialog box pops up saying "windows/startup/blah/blah/.vbs trying to get access---ok, i now realize i need to write everything down. the wininit.exe window pops up as well. last night when i cleaned it, it changed a bit. now TWO winint.exe windows pop up upon startup, plus i'm now getting an alarm about "net-log.vbs" not restored...

i would appreciate any advice you guys could give(i'll remember and post more as the day wears on). much thanks in advance

Yeah, I would try looking in the MSConfig file for the "vbs" file and for the wininit.exe file. The virus (which BTW the vbs file is a virus) has made itself HARD to remove by adding a registry addition. I would try the MSCONFIG trick I told ya about. Thanks.

Actually, WININIT.EXE is a worm virus. It is the Bymer Trojan virus.

It is a virus that uses TCP/IP to scan for IP addresses of other computers connected to the internet. It does this while the infected computer is connected to the net.

Check here for information and removal.

PC HELL: Bymer Trojan

Also some good information here:

Panda Software

Hope that helps... I had the same virus... I'm all cleaned up now.

thanks all
