Ipconfig /release and renew work in more than just XP.

Very true. What he's saying, though, is to use winipcfg, which isn't in Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

ok well FIRST OF ALL go to start, run, and type "cmd" without the quotes

THEN type ipconfig /all

then most likely ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew

try opening a DOS prompt using cmd then use the ipconfig commands.

What causes this?

I can access 'ipconfig fine from a DOS prompt, but trying to access it from start/run/ipconfig causes the DOS window to open and then immediately close.

Did you call your ISP and setup service? Do they have an install routine you need to run? With Insight here, you have to go to a specific website to register your MAC address before you can get an IP address.

ok you said that you just moved into your new apartment. have you signed up for service from a ISP (internet service provider)? if you have, they should have provided a dsl or cable modem (depending on which service you signed up for). For DSL -> phone jack to dsl modem via phoneline -> dsl modem to NIC on computer via cat5 cable. for cable -> cable wire to cable modem via coax cable -> cable modem to NIC on computer via cat5.

for some dsl providers, they use PPPoe which you have to install their software and then sign on using a user name and password. once you have logged in, the ISP will assign you a IP address.

In XP when you start IE, it should auto detect your connection.

When any command is run straight from the Run line it automatically closes upon completion.

For example, type ping google.com and run it through the run command.
