So it looks like most WinME problems are related to upgrading. Just curious if anyone who did a clean install is seeing any major issues.

I did an upgrade install from a fully updated Win98, and it's running rock solid, no problems.

Tried to upgrade and on the final boot got a message: explorer.exe has an error. If you have further problems try rebooting. Well rebooting didn't work nor did it help to go to safe mode.
Formatted and did a clean install and now everything is great. No crashes or lock ups since 9-14-00.
Please note: Some people are having lockups that seem to be related to the version of IE 5.5 that came on the ME CD. There is a newer version of IE 5.50.4134.0600 that seems to be clearing up the problems.

I've done an upgrade install on a desktop system with a K6/200 with no problems. I also did an upgrade on my 300 mhz laptop which went fine the first time except for not displaying the systray icons for AC current/battery consumption. Basically, the upgrade didn't import/preserve the portable profile in Windows 98. A second upgrade install yeilded the same thing, but with some errors in device manager. I finally ended up pulling out the old DOS 6.22 boot disk, running fdisk, and then did a clean install. I got the options for typical/compact/custom/portable installations and chose portable. This time it went perfectly. No problems in install, no problems afterward, either. I'll be doing a clean install on another machine in a week so I hope it goes as well.

I did a clean install of Me and am one of the people having problems with IE 5.5 ........I did the upgrade to .600 but am still getting random errors while browsing...usually reatating to mshtml.dll
Very Very annoying (to put it nicely)
After a restart everything is okay till the next time.....
As for being stable....well....I haven't had it running long enough without an error in IE to tell you......

Please help me out if you know a solution....

Seems like a clean install you wouldn't have that problem. That dll seems to be a problem on upgrade attempts.
It you have IE 5.5 0600 you now have the internet tools in the Add/Remove programs box in the Control Panel. Double click Internet tools and see if you can use the repair feature or maybe overlay IE 5.5 0600 again!

I did a clean install yesterday. So far nothing but problems....
1. Whenever I try to restart, it'll go to a black screen and just stay there and I have to hit the reset button to reboot. The odd thing is that when it does reboot, it doesn't run scandisk as if there was an improper shutdown.

2. I don't know how, but the control panel icon in the start menu is gone. I can get to the control panel folder by right clicking on the printers icon and doing "explore" and then going up one level, but when I try to open anything in the control panel folder, I get an error saying "Restrictions" In the title bar and "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." What the hell is that about?

Can ANYONE tell me how to fix these problems because I sure as hell don't want to format and install again.

My Setup:
Celeron 300a@466
128mb Mushkin SDRAM
Abit BH6 Mobo
CL TNT2 Ultra
IBM 22gb HD
Maxtor 5.1 gb HD
3Com 3c509 Ethernet adapter

Thanks,
Steven Love

eerrmmm that dosen't sound good........
Your even worse off than me.
If you have done a clean install there should be no restrictions on your computer whatsoever. Do another install. It's not worth trying to get around any of it.....

Oh so it actually installed this time?

For how long now? 1 day?

I know that I may sound like an ass , but I simply can't understand the reason why someone would want WinME in their system when Win2K is so much better. And don't tell me that some games may not work on Win2K because ALL the new ones do and will, and most of those that have problems don't work on WinME either.

I myself haven't even bothered trying it out, but two of my friends that have and had nothing but problems (IE crashing, not enough memory error messages, system crashing from time to time, you name it) and they both switched over to Win2K. And I hope that noone says that we just don't know what they are doing and that WE can't set the system up properly because we are studing Software Engineering.
