It seriously gets cold in New Mexico? I always figured it was basically a desert. I guess can't always go by movies and TV shows. (ex: Breaking Bad)

Yeah, NM is never what you think it is. Here is Santa Fe, the average Summer high is in the mid 80s, and at night it dips into the 50s. We have a monsoon season. We're about 2000 feet higher up than Denver. #TheMoreYouKnow

And yeah you'll want metal containers for water not plastic.
That's not surprising, considering you constantly weigh in on things that you are entirely ignorant about.

Outside of a simple roadside emergency kit plus a jack to change a tire... I honestly don't think anything else is NECESSARY. What you should do is have AAA to come rescue your wife's ass when you get stranded instead of worrying about crap like making sure the food hasn't spoiled 5 years later

Which is a problem with emergency kits in general... No one checks the batteries of their flashlights every year, nor do they check the expiration date of emergency food, etc..

Sorry to burst your bubble, but AAA isn't available everywhere and some tow services won't go out in really bad weather. Emergency kits exist for a reason and it's better to have some extra stuff in your car rather than just hope for the best. Where I live in New Mexico, if you're stuck on a county/dirt/oil field road, you're on your own. AAA doesn't even exist in San Juan County and the few tow services won't risk going out until the roads are cleared.

Did you even read the thread? We're not talking about living in the city. This is a remote area that can have treacherous weather in winter.

I dont think you've ever actually called AAA before.

They can take a LONG time to come get you. Its also quite possible you cannot get thru to them for any number of reasons.
You should still keep some basic emergency stuff in your car even if they are on the way. Blanket and road flares and a bit of food & water.

Knife and gun to kill a fat guy, slit him open, then crawl inside to wait for the Rebel Alliance.

There are drinks which freeze less readily than water, but it would still be very cold and lower her core temperature. (Plus flash freeze once opened.) Better to put hot water into a thermos before she leaves. Then she can add Hydralite, instant coffee, Koolaid, bouillon, etc. to have a hot drink and pick-me-up. Beyond that, small survival pouches of water stored under the driver's seat should thaw fairly quickly as she runs the car heater. You can also get self-heating survival rations. Very seldom is anyone trapped for longer than 24 hours, so it wouldn't be too expensive.

If you spring for the Jump-N-Carry or similar, most also have a 12V accessory port, which means she can carry a cup warmer, food warmer, or 12V travel electric blanket. I'd calculate how long it would run though, so worst case she gets stuck over night, she doesn't use all the battery before the coldest part of the night. And it's kind of either-or; if she runs a 60W travel blanket for twelve hours, it probably won't have enough left to boost the car.

One concern for me would be how she carries such heavy items so that they are accessible without leaving the car (and losing all that heat) while not having potential missiles in case of an accident.
