Winter hobbies?

I live in the cold dark hell that is Ohio. May through October isn't so bad - as you can tell from my name, I spend quite a bit of time cycling. During the winter though, I pretty much hate life. I'm just curious how other weather-challenged members cope with the indoor months. I have a strong music background and am going to take up guitar with my son. I also geocache with the family as a bit of an incentive to get outside and explore in the snow. I go skiing once or twice a season, but I don't really have a passion for it. It's really just a vehicle for G'ingTFO.

I would kill to live in the rockies and be able to go hiking in the mountains.

Sex, and when sex isn't available, fap. So fapping. It's a great way to stay in shape.

Pretty sure they just stay inside and jack off.

Why not buy one of those fat bikes or whatever that you can ride in snow?

Or get some snow shoes and get good at using them.

You're not that far from what should be some decent hiking aren't you?

Well the two main hobbies here are fishing and **cking, and the fishing sucks.

Online gaming? I play Counter Strike Global offensive. But there are obviously loads of others to play.

So you'd go hiking this time of year in the Rockies? I took a ski trip out there a few years ago....the low was -2 the high was 2 with a windchill at the top of the mountains at around -26F. Winter hiking is only advised if you own snowshoes and don't mind snow trekking. The good news is, I don't think Bear Grylls ever had to drink his pee in the winter time.

I think you should look at either getting a trainer: http://www.1upusa.com/product-trainer.html Or look into joining a gym that has good bikes, weights, and an indoor pool. There are also lots of church leagues that play basketball this time of year. I've got friends that play in those and they don't even go to church...the churches just like to use them as ringers.

If you want winter hobbies, there are lots of indoor winter projects. If you own your home, you could remodel a room or two... Try wood working or miniture railroading. N-scale is small enough you can fit it on a small board and you don't have to dedicate a room in your house. The kid in me wants a set.

ive been playing a lot more video games. i also tend to do more house projects during the winter. i also usually do a little more mobile development. in the warmer months i'm typically outside fishing or doing something if it isn't raining.

I've thought about the bike, actually. Expensive, but looks like tons of fun. We do have good hiking about an hour or so from here, might take a day off this week and head out to Hocking Hills.

I actually have a Cyclops Fluid 2 trainer. I like it, but it does little to help with the cabin fever. I actually alternate the treadmill and the trainer each day so that I'm not starting over when spring rolls around.

I tend to play games during the winter too, but that depresses me. I know that I'm just distracting myself until the weather improves. It's almost like going into hibernation. Definitely some projects that need to get done, though.

Bike, run, xc-ski, snowboard, hike, snow shoe. Don't understand why you can't still do outdoor activities b/c it's winter.

if temps are under 30F, I hate going outside for anything longer than the run to my car.

my usual winter hobbies are playing video games and cuddling on the couch with my BF wathing Netflix.

If you like biking or hiking that much, I'd recommend moving to a different part of the country that isn't miserable for half the year. I'm not knocking Ohio, it just doesn't sound like your heart is there.

fwiw - went running on Saturday for ten miles in 0F windchill temps. So cold that the sweat on my hat froze.

Too bad you're not closer to some mountains. I came in to suggest winter hiking (anything above treeline in the winter is just awesome). For something outdoors, perhaps Nordic skiing? I remember hearing about someone out in Iowa setting up his silo for ice climbing. Maybe someone in Ohio has done the same? If you want to stay indoors, maybe find a climbing gym?

Snowmobiling is my only winter hobby.

Mostly backcountry and steep and deep stuff, but it is fun to take the family to ride the trails. Plus, riding trails pisses off the cross country skiers, but since we have more of a right to use the trails because we pay registration fees, their tears are delicious.

I've been pleading that tune to my wife for a LONG time. It might actually happen this summer, so I'm excited.

Do you have a basement OP? We like to play ping pong.....keeps us active.

There's actually a table on the way for Christmas!

I found a climbing gym about 20 minutes from my place, and I'm signed up for an intro lesson on Wednesday - pretty stoked!

Dont you have a job to go to?

There's more to life than your job. At least I hope there is

If I lived in Ohio, my winter hobby would be to get a second job and save enough money to GTFO.

As it is, my main winter hobby is the same as my summer hobby. Golf.
Sure, we get some cold weather here, but if you wait a week, it's likely to be in the 60's or 70's.

+1 to snowmobiling, great sport that very few in the US get to experience.
