I absolutely dread this job. Not sure why, but I do. And the worst part is, it only takes like 25 minutes. But it's the worst 25 minutes of the year.

Disclaimer: I don't mind putting my summer rims/tires on.

Assuming you are driving a 2005 Mustang GT, 4.6L which has approximately 300 horsepower and a 5 speed manual transmission.

A Mustang GT as above, even with snow tires is about the worst car I can imagine driving in snow or ice. The rear end is way too light and fishtails easily, traction is terrible, and you are risking a nice car to get slammed up. For Ontario with lots of snow, I would garage the Mustang and drive something else. If you don't have anything else to drive, go extra SLOW!!!

Yeah it sucks... I just got new fair weather tires for one of my cars... now I really need to take the stock rims and get a new set of winters put on them. It's even harder when you have to pay for winter tires first lol!

Just ordered a set of Blizzak WS70's
Now it's time to find some cheap steel wheels to mount them on.

I have been driving RWD cars in the snow forever. I've never been stuck in this car, I know how to drive in the snow....which is more than I can say for the vast majority of drivers.

I threw my winter tires on yesterday as well. Some blizzaks on an older 16" set of WRX wheels. I have 17" stock normally. I actually find I liked my previous General winter tires better than the blizzaks.

I LOVE driving in the snow with my winters on. It is so much fun avoiding all the crappy cars with their crappy tires hah.

I've also got a set of steelies with the General Artics mounted and love them. Just hoping I can hold off until at least Thanksgiving before I throw them on. And I couldn't agree with the OP more!

I have REALLY liked my Micheln X-Ice tires for winter. Definitely recommend them. Blizzaks are nice, but I like the Michelin's a lot more. Got them for a great deal too.

Have not tried winters from Generals before though...

I know how to drive in the snow

Based on my experience, this means you actually don't know how to drive in snow. Anyone who believes they "know" generally is full of it. >_> Not saying that is 100% true of you, just that I wouldn't risk my life in your hands on a snowy day.

And, I've come to the point in my life, I just pay people to do car work for me.

I know how.

<- 5 years driving emergency vehicles in northern NH.

I think it's more accurate to say those who say they don't need snow tires and their all seasons do awesome in snow are more likely to be less than stellar than those rocking snow tires once it gets cold out.

Blizzak WS80s are going on the Forester this week. And the Viper has a broken wire in the door harness so the driver's window won't go up... Guess it's sitting until spring because it's too damn cold to drive an hour to my Viper tech with the windows down.

Sad times.

This.

Growing-up driving in MN taught me how to drive in the snow/ice/etc VERY well. Heck, we didn't even salt up in northern MN, they just put gravel down (occasionally).

That said, I feel MUCH safer in snow tires vs. all-seasons. That goes for cold-stopping distances, driving through snow and driving on thick ice.

As good as a driver you might be, that doesn't 'magically' help you stop 20ft quicker like a good, winter-tire compound can.

It was fun to drive my older FWD Mazda (in all seasons) and see SUVs/trucks stuck in the snow. There IS a driver quality to winter-driving, but winter tires are key for total safety. It's also a whole lot more enjoyable to make a long trek in the dark, snowy, and icy conditions with winter tires vs. white-knuckling the whole way on all-seasons.

My 'winter tires' went on today, though its really just another set of rims with less bald tires on them.

My hubs are rusted as hell... was hard to get one of the rims off Not a huge fan of my crappy sears discount car jack either.

When I lived in the salt belt I put antiseize on the hub/wheel. I didn't do any scientific testing but it may be worth a shot.

This time of year I start looking at the cars forlornly and take a few extra trips with them since they are about to go into storage.

my g35X is fun with blizzaks on them in the winter however.

Mine are going on Wednesday night. Still in the 60's right now, but it'll get in to the 40's for highs after that on the long range forecast, and average highs are under 50 by the time we're past the 10 day.

This is my first time dealing with a car that has summer tires on it. It doesn't usually get that cold in Alabama, but it certainly does get below 40F often enough, and it might even snow a time or two! So, I'm assuming that I probably ought to get more cold weather-oriented tires? Although, which kind would be better? It looks like I can spend far less if I go with higher performance all-season tires, which seem like the sort of thing that's designed for around here where it rarely snows.

I hate it so much I have the tire shop do it and store the tires there and pay the $25 fee per season for storage

That's it? Heh I'd probably pay $25/yr just to keep stuff out of my garage. That's cheap.

Sure 2 cars x 4 a year is $100
Instead of my loading grubby tires from my storage shed into my clean cars to have them installed and balanced I couldn't say no

Continental extreme contact DWS. Best snow tracking of the high performance all seasons. I ran them a couple years in Chicago.

You could get 'em installed on a dedicated set of winter wheels.
As a bonus, (if applicable to your state) the salt doesn't mess up the nice, shiny summer wheels

Fine by me. When your stuck on the side of the road on a snowy day, I'll just cruise on by....but don't worry, I'll honk and wave.
