I want to start transfering old VHS tapes and home movies to DVD. Would this be the card to use or would it be overkill? What about the ATI TV Wonder Pro Remote Control Edition for $50?

I'm not really interested in PVR at this time.

Apex, what TV capture software do you like (other than PVR BeyondTV and SageTV)?

I'm actually using a Cognexant 10-bit TV tuner/capture card (about $35-50) + a replayTV now, with dScaler. Will be trying Samsung SIR-T165 for OTA HDTV through firewire for recording, as soon as that unit comes.

Taken from Fatwallet... probally going to check it out tommorow.

I saw it somewhere else. FW is not the only deal site in the world.

You're right FW isn't the only hot deals site in the world

He could have meant he saw it on FW and was going to post it.

That is what i meant, i didn't mean to insinuit that you took it from fatwallet, just that i was going to post it and got it from fatwallet so it would have been taken from fatwallet. I just didn't find a circular to verify it till after i saw your post. Didn't mean offense.

hmm ..from where are you getting that ..ppl over at sage have compared both with no apparent differences in picture quality. I this this is a great deal. The rebate goes to hauppauge directly so it shoudnt be a problem.
also things to note are that the new remote with the pvr150 has more buttons looks more ergonomic than the current one and has a new ir app (may mean better response). plus the version of ulead dvd is newer than that comes with pvr250.

From the other video forums, the 150 is equivalent to 250. It's just that chip count is reduce. Think PS2 vs. PSTwo(the incredible shinking console).

not true at all ..as of now there are two versions of the pvr150 one for mce which is cheaper abt $6X(no remote , or software ) and another retail boxed one which should be available at circuit city , compusa soon this one should be around $8X ( includes remote and software)

so it seems then, that the 150 is a better deal? No rebates and a lower cost, newer software, remote and technology?

Correct?

ideally yes.. but the existing 250 is so well supported by all the pvr programs and is nearly bug free. Remember the infamous "rosyln/blackbird" version of 250 mce which was unceremoniously dumped. I hope this will be nothing like that.

What a nightmare I've got one of these cards. Although working like a champ it was very difficult to set up. psxjunkie was a gold mine of info on this though.

I bought the remote wonder edition earlier this year. Both the remote layout is terrible and the card is nothing better than the ATi TV Wonder original I bought 6 or so years ago nor the cheap Leadtek 2000XP (in fact this is a great card in comparison). I am glad I am not the only one disapointed with it.

I had a leadtek expert and when i upgraded to the 250 the difference in quality was very noticeable.

So this card requires a video overlay connector? Would it work with a Radeo 9800 Pro?

Thanks!

Does anyone think this is a good deal?:

Text

What are the differences between the 3 PVR-250 models they have? (Besides the date they were added to their catalog) If you go by these dates, the PVR-250 980 is 'older' than the 975.

I'm planning to build my first comp in a month or so-now I'm confused.

I'm not really interested in PVR at this time.

For converting home movies and such, you would be better off with a Bt878 capture card of some sort (or something that uses one of the Bt878's successors, since it's being phased out). You can do uncompressed capture with one of those, do your editing, and encode to MPEG-2 only once you're ready to make your DVD. (You could also compress with something else (such as XviD) if you want to put some video on your website or in an email.) Since they're just dumb framegrabbers with no compression, they're fairly cheap. (I've seen them starting at $40 with a tuner, $20 without.)

For PVR use, though, there's nothing better than having a hardware MPEG-2 capture card like the PVR-250 (or PVR-350, which I use with my MythTV box). You can install multiple cards to record multiple channels without having to spring for the screaming-fast processor that would be needed to compress multiple video streams in software.
