I recently put Windows XP on my machine and this thing has been crashing like crazy. I looked up the system log (right-click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > System) and checked on the log entries for all the crashes. They all have this exact same error message, save for different dates/time

Event Type: Error

I have no clue what this is. When I've tried looking it up at the Help and Support Center, I get that there's no additional information on this problem.

This first happened the day I got my computer back after having XP installed (Friday of last week), then it's been happening daily for the past three days. This morning it happens whenever I try downloading a file off of IRC. Each time it's crashed, I think IRC HAS been open, but I don't think IRC is the direct cause. Until today, I've been able to download files off IRC without it crashing. Today, it just won't cooperate at all.

Minor followup: I disabled the auto-reboot feature in WinXP so I could see what blue-screen message comes up, if any. Go figure, I disable auto-reboot and downloading something on IRC no longer crashes it... sheesh. Can anyone help identify what the above error is?

Your IRC application may not be very XP compatible. Check for updates or try another client that's explicitly XP compatible.

Good Luck

Normally I'd agree, but my IRC version (mIRC 6.0.1) is listed as XP compatible, and now it's allowing downloads again. I'm not sure IRC is the cause of the problem, I just thought I'd toss in that I think the program was open during the time of the crashes.

After XP, but I still don't think that IRC is the cause of the problem. It's allowing downloads without any problems now.

Roughly how long after your installation did your xp go south on you ?

Have you tried running a virus scan ?

Maybe worth doing a scan with LavaSoft's Ad-Aware to get rid of any potential spyware you may have . Get it Here

I haven't tried a virus/Norton-esque disk scan yet. Now that you mention it, though, I better.

I've had this WinXP install since June 21st. That evening about six hours after I got it back is when I experianced the first crash. It didn't happen again for a few days so I figured it was a one-shot fluke. Five days after the first crash, it happened again, and started happening on a daily basis until yesterday when it happened three times within a 20-minute period when I tried downloading some stuff off of IRC. Hasn't happened again, yet.

I do a lot of anime fansub downloading off of IRC, and yesterday was the only time the thing crashed possibly BECAUSE of beginning a download. I shut off auto-restart and tried downloading something again later, expecting a blue-screen so I could jot down the error message, but oddly enough, it worked.

I'm gonna run a Norton test on this thing, but I'm taking it back to the shop regardless ASAP. This thing shouldn't be crashing like this when it's brand new.

Bump!

And oddly enough, this thing is working better lately. Maybe it's 'cuz I haven't been doing as many IRC downloads lately... hmm. Well, a new version of mIRC is out, so I might give that a shot. Who knows, maybe it WAS IRC that's been messing this thing up. ^_^;;;

Still, anyone know of a good site for seeing what the error categories/IDs mean?
