WinXP CTRL Panel Icons ...where?

I've notice over the years that sometimes the installer icons are shown instead of the predominate program icon.

I'm not interested in changing them in the control panel, I'm just curious as to where they are "pulled" from...

Each icon in the control panel represents an applet with the .cpl extension. I believe the applets contain their own icons. The list of standard system applets to load is located in the registry at at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Extended Properties\[key value]\. The list of third party add-on applets is located in the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Cpls.
