WinXP irritations

1. Whenever I try to change my Nvida drivers, I'll delete them from "Add/Remove Programs" and reboot. The problem is that upon rebooting, my card is found and new 52.16's are automatically installed. I don't want these drivers. I have disabled "Auto Updates" under Services, but it keeps on auto-installing itself. What am I missing?

2. I also disabled that pesky Messenger in both Outlook Express and the Messenger program itself. But it occasionally pops a little window up from my Task Bar notifying me that I have to verify my e-mail address in Outlook Express. That little thing is driving me nuts. Help!

Just 'update' the driver in the Device Mangler to whatever version you want, Windows always automatically uses the version it has intalled when it detects hardware and that's not related to Automatic Updates at all.

1) Try Driver Cleaner 2.

2) Did you disable the Messenger service?
If you mean Windows Messenger.... Uninstall it....

Yeah, I'm referring to the Messenger chat program that puts the little 'blue man' icon on the Task Bar when it's open.

Also, when it comes to video drivers, I have never had a system that would automatically detect my card and automatically install the drivers. I have always had to manually install them myself, but my computer is now doing the install automatically. How do I stop it?

Try cab cleaner (comes with driver cleaner2) and disconnect your internet connection before you install.

Disconnect your connection like the post above said. This has irked me terribly before

The only way to get rid of the little funny looking, highly irritating, can't stop it from popping up guy is to: Go to regedit and find all occurances using the term "msmsgs.exe".

Do not, I repeat DO NOT delete the folder from the C drive and think that it's going to cure the problem. You are absolutely right about the messenger and MSN messenger being two different programs. I beleive you will find about ten to twelve places that you will have to delete. Sometimes if you open the program and go to perferences or options (can't remember) and turn everything off, it might work. But I've nevre beenthat lucky. I've always had to go to regedit and get rid of it there.

Simply renaming the folder works. No need to go searching and changing the registry. Unless you enjoy that sort of thing. I had to boot into safe mode, browsed to the folder on the C:\ drive and renamed it to something other than what it was. Never saw MSN Messenger again. Ever.

1. Go into your windows\inf folder and search for files containing the string "nvidia". One or more of these will be the inf file for the drivers you already installed. Move them to a different folder (do not erase them just to be safe).

2. XP-Antispy allows you to completely uninstall Windows Messenger. Get it here.
