I apologize if this in the wrong area.......but it does deal with networking to a degree.......from the software side. I have a machine at home that runs WindowsXP Professional, and I have it completely setup and ready to run the remote desktop features. The machine is connected via a DSL connection to the internet. Now, my second machine at college is hooked into the colleges 10/100 (well 100) Cat5 Cabling network. I suspect it's daisy-chained and is connected via proxy to a machine that actually has the T1 connections to the internet. It also has WindowsXP Professional hooked up, and the remote desktop works just fine.
Here's the problem: From time to time my family needs help, and I've REALLY been tired of stepping them through it over the telephone. I'd really like to be able to connect to the machine at home via remote desktop built-in to XP Pro. I always run into problems though because of the vast differences in networking architecture between the machines. I know the college is behind a firewall, and perhaps this makes it impossible. Are there ANY options I have to be able to activate a remote desktop session with my machine at home? Do I need to try and setup some sort of VPN? I really am out of ideas, and will admit I don't know what to do (yeah, it's tough to admit)?
