Great point. The broad people MS is targeting do not know how to install a Operating System. Downloading and installing drivers is just about the hardest thing they can do themself.

They wouldn't have to format and reinstall. They might have, say, Windows 95 and want to upgrade to 98. That doesn't take all that much work. Pop in the CD, click next a few times, and let it run.

These have been some really entertaining threads.

I still think that this has a little to do with piracy and a lot to do with getting comsumers used to the idea of software-as-a-service. Afterall, who will be affected by this? Rank and file consumers? Not a chance - as has been said here before, most of those people wouldn't know what to do with an OS disk if their lives depended on it. Hackers and pirates? Nope, they'll find a way. So who is inconvenienced? People who know enough about their computers to build and modify them and who are honest. I've got to believe that's a small group by comparison. I just don't think this will have much of an effect on piracy, but it will gauge public reaction and it will get people accustomed to the mechanics of a software-as-a-service business model and it'll do it by only upsetting a really small sector of their market.

Do they stand to make more money this way? They must think so or they wouldn't be taking this approach. Is there anything wrong with that? No, they are in business to make money. I don't begrudge MS for wanting to get paid for using their product. I wouldn't begrudge them for wanting to get paid to support it (even if that meant Windows update was a subscription service - though I probably wouldn't use it).

I do have a problem with the being inconvenienced just because I wanted to upgrade my box (add a new hard drive or a new video card). For that reason and that reason alone, I'll resist purchasing any XP product (or any other that has a machine coded activation requirement). I've had an application that used an activation scheme like this and I've quit using it because of the inconvenience of contacting the vendor everytime I format c:. Fortunately, it was only a Flash tool. An operating system or office suite is different.

So, I choose not to buy it, but I don't begrudge MS for doing what they're doing.

As for the suggestion of nefarious use of personal information ... listen to music instead of Art Bell for awhile.

One big problem with MS's hardware locking scheme is that there is no long term unlocking system. What if I want to reinstall XP 10 years from now to putz around with "old" software? I shouldn't need to worry about the internet infrastructure being the same, MS existing, etc. MS assumes everyone will simply do as they ask and frankly most probably will.

Um, in 10 years no one will be using XP. That's like using MS-DOS 3.0 now. And anyway, they have cracks for it so that you won't have to do re-register.

Actually, I know of people who are still running DOS 3.x. Anyway, it's beside the point. I want to purchase an "eternal" software license. For an OS, perpetual full use is a must. You shouldn't have to rely on the hacking community to ensure the longevity of your OS. MS should make a public statement something like, "after we make as much money as possible with XP we will release a patch that will no longer tie the software to your hardware so you can use it forever, no muss no fuss".

A local church. They use an old DOS app VP Planner (spreadsheet) to handle offerings tabulations, etc. They can't afford to upgrade to the latest and greatest. And because they have a permanent license to run DOS and VP they can humm along forever (or as long as god allows their hardware to function).

You know, since alot of you are talking about Corporate licensing (most, not all), there is such a thing as the Open Licesing model. This DOES NOT include the Activation feature. Yes, this might be the most widely warez'd version of XP, but it is available. Now, this will not be available to the general public, as to qualify you need to purchase at least 5 licenses.

Most, if not all, of the "I hate MS" is coming from the GNL/Open Source communities. I do not fully support Microsoft in how they conduct a business, but they are a business. Do I think that the activation feature is invasion of my privacy, HELL F'n NO. I worry more about the local DMV scandles rather than MS taking the serial number of my HD or video card. Come one people. Grow up. This is not 1984. And for all of you non-itellect people out there, 1984 was a book written by George Orwell about the Big Brother syndrom.

I don't resent it, I admire it. I'm only 20 so maybe I've missed the big day when everyones privacy went to the wayside, but I've always kept my info private.

If my bank has problems with bank robberies they might find that a body cavity search for everyone at the front door would all but end them, but in the mean time I think they'll see alot of customers not coming in

<< The DR-DOS issue is BS. That only occured with a beta version, not the final version. >>

Actually.... do you still have a copy of win3.1 laying around? It was NOT a beta version. after reading about the report I used an old NONBETA version to replicate it. The code really is in there! The people who owned DRdos before whoever owns it now (its changed hands so many times) won a nice settlement from MS because of this.
