I have heard of people having nothing but problems with Windows XP Service Pack 2. I have put off installation because of what I have heard. Has anyone here experienced major problems after installation?

Thanks in advance.

what problems? who was it? gotta take certain things with a grain of salt. I personally am usually wary of MS SP's, but they've been testing the crap out of this one, and i've been running the betas for some time on quite a few machine, and its nothing less than a great SP.

Just install it, you can always uninstall it if you want to, but eventually you'll need it. People always worry about the SP, and yet the only ones I remember being bad from MS was NT4-SP4 and SP6 (not sp6a), none of the other ones were ever short lived or had patches come out to fix problems with them, they simply worked well.

I have done several installations without issue. But a co-worker was unable to get to the desktop after rebooting. He was able to boot into safe mode and uninstall SP2 from add/remove, so if this is a worst-case scenario I'd say it isn't too bad.

ive had no problems with it. the only way you can know if its compatible with your system is to test it out. create a restore point before installing. if you have any problems, just go back.

So far so good... installed it on my rig and haven't notice any problems or difference for that matter.

Couple more days of use, and SP2 will go on my wife's seldom used PC.

I had the same problem as your friend. Did he find a fix?

has everyone who has had "no problems" done a fresh/recent reinstall or just installed to their current machines as is?

Installed SP2 on a 2 yr old install of XP Home.

Hmm, might be time to start fresh. No sluggishness though, so I'm happy.

The closest thing I've had to a "problem" is that my wife's laptop seems to be using more RAM than it was before the install. But I dont know for certain how much it was using beforehand so it's hard to know for sure, it may just be something she's stuck on it since I last noticed (next time around I'm not even giving her power user rights, too much of a hassle to clean up afterwards).

Almost 3 year old WinXP installation which was an upgrade from a 2 year old install of Win2k. No problems here.

I've got the same problem....sort of.

Windows boots into the desktop, but sits at the wallpaper for about 45 seconds before the explorer shell loads. During this time I can CTRL+ALT+DEL and look around - my CPU is about 1% load, and there is virtually no disk activity. It's almost behaving as if a driver is trying to load and then timing out.

I disabled the firewall and anti-virus alert (since NAV 2003 doesn't communicate with it anyway), but that didn't do anything.

Going through this checklist just now reminded me to check the Event Log. In the System Event Log, I found a recurring entry -> The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service hung on starting.

I don't know much about this except what what XP says - "Provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras". My scanner software works fine and I transfer camera images using my USB card reader so I disabled the service. We'll see if that did the trick.

Edit: That was it. Cool. Still don't know why I had to disable the service

Fresh Install = very good

upgrade = not so good

gave up on the upgrade and just did a fresh install and it solved the nagging bugs.
