Just built a new rig and installed a truly legit version of XP a couple days ago. The BIOS clock thought it was January 1 of 2004 or something. I reset the date in the OS, installed doom3, and rebooted. Problem is that after that i got some nonsense about the key being out of date. Makes sense i suppose, but in reality the OS has been installed for like 3 days! I did a search and found NUMEROUS keys, dont need them, but this "anti-piracy" sh1t is simply silly. Dont get me started on STEAM and HL2.... :|

Makes no sense. The worst thing that could have happened is that you lost your 30 days to activate since the system thought more than 30 days transpired...

I ya don't like it, there are numerous other operating systems you can use that have no annoyances like this. You download it, your free to do with it what you will.

Activation is simple to do anyways and is the first thing that should get done, then you don't have to worry about running out of time or whatnot.

If you don't like the restrictions of XP, you are really going to hate longhorn. You won't even be able to install software without begging permission from Mr. gates and crowd. and of course there will be enough dweebs that buy into his scheme to dominate their pc and software that he will succeed. I plan to be completely converted to Linux by then.

Yup, i know. But this machine is not networked yet and my cell is dead. My problem is with M$ and all their money. I bought this version of XP, but its actually EASIER for pirates to install and use than real customers. SW companies are losing sight of customers in favour STUPIDITY...

So MS is supposed to take into consideration the fact that you might screw yourself by changing the date on your computer, you don't have a network connection and no way to call them to manually activate? You sound like the people that made McDonald's put the "WARNING: CONTENTS ARE HOT" labels on the coffee cups...

Oh and if you don't like activation so much, don't use Windows.

There are better methods of making activation go away forever.

And Longhorn's WPA will be hacked within a month tops.

Any links to back this claim up? Considering Longhorn hasn't even reached beta stage yet, I don't see how anyone could make this claim.

This is all just FUD. Just about every existing application built for 2K/XP will run on Longhorn.

I really don't see why someone has to have a network connection to register to legally own Windows XP, what happens if you don't want to access the net ever and only play games or do word files on your pc?

You dont have to have an internet connection. You can call in on the phone to activate windows.

The you call them on your phone. Had to do this with my grandmas computer. Took a whole 5 minutes.

I had a real legal copy, from the M$haft store (employee version), I couldn't validate over the net so I had to call them, took about 1 hour talking to 2 different reps as my key was deemed illegal, the first rep thought I had the illegal copy while the second had me read nearly every thing that was printed on the box and every part of the hologram on the disk.

Funny they couldn't even give out a correct key with a purchased product, and then treat you like a criminal when you bought it.

Still don't trust them but there are not really many choices for us dumb folks who get lost in Linux.
