Winzip gone Berserk!

Installed Winzip, was tired, must have made a mistake in the associations with file types.
Now, every time I click any icon, or select any option, file, etc... anywhere in my system, WinZip starts instead of what I wanted.


Example: Click any icon on Desktop, Winzip starts.

Example: Click start, click settings, click control panel, click add/remove programs, and Win zip starts.

My system is paralyzed. I know, I am an Idiot. I can't even shut down my system, because when I click shut down, WinZip starts.

Please help.

not sure if you tried it before, but ... have you tried uninstalling winzip (if it is possible without winzip launching?) < edit: forget about this line -- didn't read carefully >

another thing is try to restart and get to windows in safe mode (ctrl alt del if shutdown won't do for you). then from there try to uninstall winzip

if not, open windows explorer, go to tools -> folder options -> file types -> and see the files associated with winzip. if you know how to reassociate to the correct program, edit it. otherwise, remove it

if all else fail, well ..... format and reinstall always work

edit: bah ... didn't see you couldn't add/remove program...
try doing it in safe mode (reboot and press f4 (or is it f8?) during startup)

Safe mode makes no difference. Winzip still starts with everything.

Can't open Explorer (WinZip again)

Can't uninstall in any way...(Winzip AGAIN)

Any way to remove all of winzip's associations?

Howabout using Start > Run... to launch something?

Attempted to uninstall Winzip through the "RUN" line, but that started WinZip as well...cant access "Add/ remove programs" (starts Winzip)......also the going thru Start, programs, Winzip, uninstall option also starts Winzip.

This thing has just crippled me. Need to find a way to remove ALL of Winzip's associated file types. Anyone have any ideas?

Ouch! You may want to just re-install Windows, what OS are you using? I'd also try scanning your drives for a virus.

I gotta agree with the above statement....sounds like a virus....reformat.

Have u tried uninstalling it using command prompt ?
If you're using Win2k, I think there's option to automatically activate it when window starts (recovery console or something like that)

ROFL... for some reason I find that funny. Haunted Winzip takes over your computer, it does sound like a virus though. I don't think Winzip makes everything turn into Winzip like that, only files like .cab, .zip, etc. etc. That's a bit odd and must suck A LOT.

Worm confirmed. First encountered in Poland Nov/2000. Arrives as e-mail message with 2 file attachments, HYML format. Corrupts registry.

Reformat/reinstall complete, told family to be more careful with their email.
