wired Internet connection woes :(

so i built me a little shuttle lan rig, and it's a work of art, i love it, even if it is 'slower' than my main rig. anyhow, both connect to the internet just fine at my house thru my roommate's router (linksys i believe), and they both worked just fine at my old house, accessing the net thru a netgear router. my problem lies in the fact that i took the little rig to my buddy's house and attempted to hook up there, but no matter how many times i released my connection and renewed, nothing happened. even if i directly connected the modem to the rig itself, it could never establish a connection. i even quadruple-checked that nothing was statically set.

so i gave up and brought it back and hooked it back up to my network, and bang, internet works....sigh....

so now i let my x borrow it so she can play WoW and she hooks it up (i'm assuming correctly) and now she can't access the net at her house....

any thoughts as to what i'm missing?

Were you getting an IP address on the other connections? Did you do an "ipconfig" to check?

Need more info.

Make sure your buddy's house has a DHCP server setup(on his router or elsewhere). If he is running static-ip's, then of course you are never going to get a DHCP'ed IP.

is your buddy using AOL? Even though they have broadband service, you have to install their software in order to access the internet. Other than that, it sounds like you weren't getting an ip. Need more info about his network setup.

If you're not getting an IP, that's a major problem, hehe. How does your buddy connect to the internet? Are his IP settings on his computer set to get an IP address automatically, or is there a static IP set on his pc? Does he use a router behind the DSL modem?

Give us a detailed description of the network and we can help....without it, there are just too many unknowns.

my friend has no router....just a direct connection from the modem to the pc...his isp is Charter....i'm unsure of how their service works

PS: my rig uses xp pro if that would make a difference

It could be that there is no DHCP option from the ISP and you'd have to statically assign an IP address, or it could possibly be that the ISP has mac-filtering enabled and is denying your IP request based on that.

i'm fairly certain that i checked his rig to see if he had a static ip, and he did not...perhaps he has some software installed that i don't know about...

Unfortunately, Network is a mutual effort of a Device (computer) and the other side of the "Force".

You cannot expect plugging your computer to any available RJ-45 port and voila, it is working.

Your Buddy can connect directly to the Modem because his NIC's MAC address is the ISP authentication number.

Jack what are you blubbering about? Cable/DSL Internet authentication (password).
