I?ve been running my server and workstation on a network by themselves for a few years without any real viruses or security threats. a few friends just moved in and are now on the same network. One is a winxp machine the other a winme laptop. Both of my systems are up to date with updates and antivirus. I?ve already updated both of the other machines with antivirus and windows updates. The most important thing is that i do not want my server or workstation infected or compromised. I have no shares on my workstation, and a few shares on my server for different things. One of my roommates worries me because s/he (trying not to be gender specific) isn?t good with computers, and i could easily see him/her getting a virus or something. Will infected or compromised machines on my network affect my computers? How can I setup something to protect against this? Would placing my roommates machines on a completely different router help segregate them from my computers?
