Wired/Wireless Router and Cards for Non-Profit School

My kids attend a very small startup school (<10 kids). We just got free cable internet access today. The machines we are running are old (PI/PII) running Win98SE. I'm looking for a cheap way to share the connection with about 6 computers (two of which are in a different room and running Cat5 is not an option with our landlord).

I'd like to get these connected on the cheap as our school doesn't have the money. I'll have to pay for these out of pocket.

Thanks!

if there are <10 kids then I'm assuming they have parents. Why aren't the parents doing their part and donate some money for the equipment? I'm not trying to be mean or anything but that might be a better option than begging in the hot deals forum. Oh yeah and I guess you've posted this in the wrong forum/thread, etc.

You're not helping either. Give him a better option than that smoking hot deal here you gave him.

Oh yeah here is an idea. Try contacting linksys, d-link or any other company that produce these routers to donate them to you guys.

you should check those pentium 1 systems to see if they have usb ports and what version of windows they're running. and maybe check with some local businesses to see if they are willing to donate any old computers, nice tax deduct for them if they have older machines lying around unused.

I believe what they are trying to say is that this forum is to post Hot Deals, not ask for them...

In before the lock. But seriously, maybe I can turn this into a bit of a hot deal. The HP Powerline network gear is on sale everywhere. It creates a 2Mbs connection through the electrical wiring and has both a USB and parallel port connection to the computer. I figure this should work for any old computer and they're on clearance at OfficeMax B&M (YMMV, $23) or about $18 or less each online (Overstock, for example). Definitely not a speedy network, but should work nicely for legacy systems such as yours. You should also avoid plugging them into power strips as it may garble your data a bit and slow them down.

And the hot deal part is these little babies USED to sell for $150-$200 each. So... that's like 90% off! Now if you change the title quickly enough and maybe repost some of this info in the first message as "I needed -blah-blah-blah- and came across this great deal on a solution that might be useful to others..." you might be able to avoid the lock.
