Yep. It's in the fine print for all these agents. They don't call it a cancellation fee. They call it an device subsidy or equipment discount you've been provided in exchange for staying with the carrier 180 days. I don't know if they really try to collect.

Anyone know if wirefly allows number porting from AT&T WS to Cingular? I just went thru the whole order process on Letstalk.com for a V551 and on the last screen they say they cannot port numbers from AT&T WS to Cingular. What a pain.

I would say.
Port number over to T-mobile or Cingular.
You have like 30 days to decide to keep the service and what not.
Cancel.
Port back over to Verizon ?

not too sure how feasible taht would be but it may be an idea.

T-Mobile and Cingular use GSM networks, while Verizon uses CDMA. The phones are not compatible between networks.

Umm..no. Cingular bought AT&T Wireless but they are still 2 seperate companies. I still have an AT&T phone and rate plan. The reps on the phone I talk to still work for AT&T WS.

You can port the number AFTER activation too. Get the new fone, try out the service. If it is to your liking, then port your old number over. You will want to go to a corporate cingular store to do this.

What are you talking about ?
You're not porting over the flippin technology. Just the number.

I ported over a Verizon Mobile number to Cingular yesterday.
If you cancels, he'll have to return the phone. Most providers will allow you to exchange phones.

how is cingular as far as service. i hate losing calls. currently with sprint and i never lost a call with them. before i had a motorola and used at&t. i would lose calls every once and a while.

right now im trying to decide between cingular verizon and tmobile. id stay with sprint but my contract just expired back in august and im looking for a new phone. which i guess leads to my next question. if i cancel my current service can i renew it with one of these? cuz if that were the case id probably jsut stay sprint.

It completely depends on where you specifically live. Generally speaking, Cingular and Verizon have broader rural coverage than Nextel and Sprint, but it varies by city. In the end, the same carrier that has a reputation for the best network in your city might have a dead spot right in your driveway. The best thing is to ask your friends or borrow their phones. You can also try http://www.cellreception.com/index.html

Also worth noting: GSM handsets (Cingular & T-Mobile) are usually a little cheaper and smaller than CDMA handsets (Verizon & Sprint).

I don't understand this question. If your Sprint contract expired in August, you should be able to switch to another carrier with no penalty, transfer your phone number, and get a new free phone (see the original post).

hehe that second question refers to.

1. canceling current sprint account.
2. starting a new account with sprint to get discount.

cell phone hunting is kinda fun considering my current phone is a monochrome giant. its kinda funny people make fun of me for it.

Verizon has disabled a lot of the bluetooth functions in the V710. Lots of good reading here: www.v710.org

errr. Still wrong, as of January the full merger, came into effect. Yes you still recieve a bill and answer to people that work under the AT&T name but their paycheck and your service is run with (in most areas) cingular technology.

Have none of you guys checked out www.letstalk.com? I'm making $50.00 on my nokia 6230 phone.
$50 cash back is pretty standard for this phone right now (Letstalk, A1, Wirefly, Amazon, Intelenet, Cellularchoices, etc.). But as the original post states, this link has the best prices without any rebates required. In the case of the 6230 and the other Cingular deals, the benefit is not huge (as isekii pointed out, the Mpx220 and the 7610 were huge deals until they raised the price on those). Some of the T-Mobile and Sprint deals are more than $100 below anything else out there.

Example: The Motorola A630 with T-Mobile is $69.99 shipped.
Same phone is $299.99 from T-Mobile, $199.99 -$100 rebate from Wirefly normally, or $275+ on eBay without a service plan.

And no it's not typical. I'm making $50 on my 6230 and other companies are simply giving it away for free.

And playing with this phone for about two days now and it's awsome.

I wouldn't do it. What if your phone number gets frozen for like 30 days after a change (meaning you can't make another change within 30 days of the last change)? I do not know for sure if that's the case though.

Also, doesn't your credit history get hit twice (once every time you apply for a new plan)?

Oh...I suppose you're right, but either way it's not really of much use to me since I'm already in a contract with AT&T (part of a family plan, actually). The $159 just looked attractive to me since it's with no rebates, whereas otherwise I'd usually be paying $300 up front and then waiting six months to hopefully receive rebates, or so is my understanding.

I don't suppose you (or anyone else here) happens to know if I'd be able to upgrade my phone at some point through them ("Cingular")? Would I have to wait until a year is up? I've had the plan since last June... (Although I'd rather get a new phone sooner rather than later )

To keep your # and get a new phone you have to "migrate" to cingular...it basically sucks.

about six months back I changed from cingular(not enough minutes) to ATT(incredible plan but horrid billing problems and constant dropouts) and then after 30 day canceled and went to Nextel (great signal, expensive plans) all the while porting my number back and forth.

Just make sure you don't accept if they offer a 'number protection plan' for free. I know Nextel does this, and while it's not a big deal(they want verbal ok to complete transfer), it is just one more thing to go wrong.
