Wireless charging is not a gimmick.

My phone is always topped off. it is a no brainer. All you do is plop it down and it charges. Someone calls you pick it up like a regular phone, no cables etc. and when done you put it back down.

Anyone who thinks its a gimmick is wrong, Every phone should have this feature built in.

Not sure where that came from.

Even toothbrushes have been doing that a long time.

It came from R&D then it was developed into a product that is mass produced and sold to the public.

Apple should get on board.

It's a gimmick if you don't use it, I had it on my Nexus 4 and used it successfully maybe 3 times. I especially enjoyed how my phone had to be placed ABSOLUTELY PERFECT on the charger for it to charge. And 98% of the time I would wake up only to see it had stopped charging yet I hadn't touched the phone.

While I'm sure it's gotten a lot better, it's not a feature I'll ever use. And it doesn't work on metal phones, so I definitely won't ever use it because I hate plastic & glass phones.

It's a gimmick if it doesn't add value, not if you don't use it. Otherwise you could say Airplay is a gimmick if you don't use it.

Wireless charging is convenient and improving. Once quick charging is available, it should become a standard feature.

I look forward to a truly cordless world in the next couple years. Everything already syncs wirelessly, I'd be happy to relegate even a usb-c cable to a desk drawer.

That's a measure of the charging pad, not the phone, as far as alignment goes. Anything called a "three coil charger" was made specifically for the reason you described... it has multiple coils so it doesn't matter where you put your phone on the pad, it'll work. No more aligning it perfectly like a standard single coil design.

Again, this was a problem with the PAD not the PHONE

I'd rather have a phone that I unplug in the morning and am confident that the battery would last me a full day of hard use.

Now this I'd like. A totally sealed phone with no need of any physical ports at all. (You'd need a service port for when things go tits up but that could be hidden away with the sim slot and SDcard)

Until that point I'll stick with USB charging.

Yep, after having it it's hard to go back to not using. It's great to have a dock on the nightstand and just plop the phone down as go to bed. No wires or things to mess with. It's also pretty amazing at how forgiving the charge is. I've got this case on my G4: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXQI0MK?psc=1

I can set the phone down on the charger even in that case and it will still charge. Crazy.

Wasn't there a university research where they're able to convert the abundance of wireless noise/signal all around us and harness that to charge a device? That's what I want to see. Now that's wireless charging.

Having moved from a Nexus 5 to a OnePlus One, it's definitely painful to lose wireless charging. I loved wireless charging. Was a big plus in my book. I'm looking forward to switching back to the next Nexus.

I added a wireless charging back on my S5 so I wouldn't have to keep futzing with the waterproof USB cover. I love both the wireless charging and the water resistance. I only have a small single coil charger but I drop it on so the pad is centered-ish without much thought of position. I don't think I've ever had a case where it wouldn't charge because it wasn't in the right position.

It's not a gimmick, but companies jumped on the bandwagon too, too early.

The technology isn't going to get mainstream acceptance unless it charges quickly, doesn't require precise placement and, most importantly, is almost a no-brainer to get. That not only means having it built into the phone's back as a matter of course, but offering a charging pad that's either very cheap or (preferably) included in the box.

We're getting there, since there's a new fast wireless charging standard and looser placement restrictions. It's the accessibility that's holding things back now.

QFT. My HTC M7 lasts me at least 2 days and I only plug it in when I go to bed if it's below 25% battery. Hence, no wireless charging needed in my case.

I need it to work with a case. Not one of those ridiculous cases that makes the phone way longer and has to be plugged into the usb or lightning port, but one that uses dedicated contacts built into the back of the phone to transfer power from the coil in the case. Working without a case does nothing for me because I've never owned a phone that I managed to not drop at least twice a week.

Huh? It works fine built in and with any regular case on the phone. If it's an iPhone, then it is going to be a jury rigged contraption no matter what.

As for this precise placement nonsense, people should just keep on buying $4 eBay specials and then complaining they suck. My Nokia chargers (incidentally, dirt cheap if you grab em on sale) are rock solid.

Loved wireless charging and used it all the time on my Nokia 920. Hate having to plug in my Iphone 6 in my car, at my desk, when I get home, etc.

Bought a fast charger for work for all of $14.95. My Note 4 is in the high 90s 30 minutes after I plugged it in. Qi charging? I think I'll pass.

Never a problem, I am also surprised at how fast it charges. All I do is just plop it down and not think about it. The phone I am using is a Brigadier brick phone and it charges right through the OEM case I got for it.

The phone I have is a Brigadier that has the coil built in. I have the phone in a case that snaps on to a belt case. I am able to charge it even with this case on the phone.

Now the phone itself is quite thick, over 1/2 thick with the case. The wireless charger is pretty long and wide.

About lithium batteries the shallower the cycle the longer they last and the longer the charge lasts on them. Running them all the time down to 25% is not good in the longterm.

Nice thing about wireless charging, no wear and tear on the connection, or having to open and close repeatedly the waterproof plug for the port.

That's interesting. My brother's lg g3 wouldn't charge through his case. It wasn't an oem case, but then again the oem case that supported charging offered no protection for the phone at all. It seems to me that cases with enough bulk to provide real shock absorption would all be too thick for wireless charging through them. The only solution I can think of is for the phone manufacturer to provide contacts on the exterior of the phone that wireless charging cases can transfer power through. Then it won't matter how thick the case is.

There is definitely a limited amount of thickness you can have before it will stop working, but you can get several mm and still work. I've never had an issue with any of my phones with cases (Nexus 4, GS4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6). These were usually TPU style cases but on the GS4 I had a hybrid case that was much thicker. It still worked with no issues.

Multi-coil chargers are really essential for all of this, if people tried it early in the Nexus 4 days when many of the few chargers on the market were single coil (or undocumented) then they should try it again. With proper chargers it's a much better situation.

My note 4 is in a thick TPU case and still works. I had some concern when I ordered the case but it works fine. Each phone may be a tad different but I wouldn't be too concerned with cases that aren't the tank proof otterbox things.

Yeah my Spigen stand case even works and that thing is pretty thick. A good 3 coil charger is all it takes.

For me charging my phone/tablet is not about convenience, it's about getting it done faster. Quick charging is awesome, something I value much more than wireless charging.
