Hi all... I'm looking for a wireless client adapter for my desktop PC. In the FAQ, I saw that Anandtech suggests Agere ORiNOCO USB Client Adapter Gold.I found the PracticallyNetworked.com review and they seemed to like it. I have been searching around for others opinions on this adapter but it seems less popular than the PCMCIA version. Does anyone have any experience with this device?
I'd also take suggestions for other wireless adapters.

Thanks!

The PCMCIA Orinoco performs slightly better then the USB version.

However, you want to use it for a desktop, once you stick the PCMCIA into a PCI Adapter in the back of your box, you will get much less performance.

The USB in the other hand is attached to a USB cord, it can be placed in a much better transmission position then the PCMCIA, and hence it is a better solution for a Desktop. Reviews don?t take this into account.

JackMDS- Thanks for the info.

I have pretty much decided that I want a USB wireless client. But I can't decide on which one. As usual, it's the quality vs price thing. The Orinoco seems to get good reviews (at least the PCMCIA version) which makes me think that the USB version should be pretty good (since the PCMCIA card is basically in the USB version). But, the Orinoco seems to be significantly more expensive (~$119) than say an SMC (~$60) or D-Link (~$65) solution. So I am wondering if the extra cost will give me that much better performance.

Also, does it matter that the Orinoco does not have an external antenna? I saw that you can buy one but I'd rather not have to buy extra stuff.

I currently have a D-Link wireless router (the dl-711) which is one floor up and one room removed from where I plan to put my desktop.

Thanks!

I assume that you are talking about SMC or D-Link USB modules. Any PCMCIA will need a PCI adapter that cost $40.

To choose between the USB devices is a matter of the condition of your installation (distance, type of walls, electrical screening, electrical noise, etc.).
If you can get a cheaper card (that can be returned), and try.

I have an installation using the D-Link USB DWL-120, and it is working fine.

In a second installation (about 25? furher), I tried the D-Link and I could not get a stable connection. I put an Orinoco USB, and it is working fine.

However, your Mileage may vary.

Good Luck.

The PCMCIA Orinoco performs slightly better then the USB version.
inside of USB version you will see PCMCIA card.
Orinoco proves to be the best for distance, quality, less interference

I posted the same exact question last week. I am setting up wireless for my little sis at my parents house. Altho the general consensus here was to go with the Orinco, it was a little more then I wanted to spend (remember it is for my 12 yr old sis who is on 28.8 dial up, not me
I wound up going with the SMC 2662w (think that is the model). I was able to get it from a reseller on Amazon for $62 and change shipped (about $10-15 less then anyone else had it).
I would recommend him if you are int. in this model. Feel free to PM me about it. I ordered thru Amazon Friday nite, he shipped USPS prio on Sat and was in my hands Monday, brand new unopened so I am happy.
I have not hooked it up yet as I am going to my parents for July 4th. This has 2 external antennas I believe and the reviews have been favorable.
Again, feel free to PM if you have any ??s I could help you with.
