Wireless distance limit

I have a local ISP furnishing a wireless connection using a Belkin Wireless G Router 2.4Ghz-802.11g. It says that it is running 54mbps. In my PC I have a Netgear WG311 v3802.11 Wireless PCI adapter. I get a good signal in the same room as the router. I need to move my PC down to the basement. This is a total distance of 20 ft. and there are two wood floors in between. In the basement it shows a signal of 36Mbps but I can't connect to the internet or email. My wife takes her Laptop all over the house (except the basement) and has no problem. My question: Am I expecting too much from this router? My ISP said that he would run me an extension cable however I don't relish the idea of drilling two more holes through the wall and running a cable down the outside. My home is on the market and this is unsightly.

Which ways are the antennaes pointing? They should NOT be pointing "towards" eachother - they should be sideways. That may improve your speed.

You should have connectivty at 36. This sounds like another issue.

54 vs. 36 is speed, not signal.

Are you certain the computer still connects when you are near the router?

I have had trouble with the NetGear wireless adapters in the past. I have the PCMCIA version of that same adapter and I get crappy range, whereas my girlfriend's eeePC gets great range off the same router.

I chalk it up to a crappy wireless NIC.
