Didn't notice this till recently, but my Daughter's web browsing is at least 3-4 times faster than mine. A guess there, but really large difference.

I'm wired to the router, she is on wireless signal.

I'm on ubuntu Dapper, Firefox version 1.5.0.3

She's on Windows XP, Firefox version (latest).

My wife complained how slow mine is to hers last night, well I was just on it fixing something. I can't believe how fast it is to mine while web browsing.
Web pages load nearly as fast as you can click links.

Download speeds (files) are about the same though.

Any idea why my web pages load (and connect) so much slower.

you probably have IPv6 installed, and it's trying to do DNS/HTTP stuff via IPv6 first, and then IPv4

thank you,

just did a quick google on that. Many report disabling it increases speed for web browsing.

It is enabled, just looking into how to kill it. For anyone else getting the same thing.

disable IPV6

To check IPv6 state open terminal and execute:
Code: ip a | grep inet6

If this command shows some lines - IPv6 is enabled. If output is empty - IPv6 disabled.

My output is not empty.

wasn't as easy in Dapper, but I've got it disabled

disable IPv6

had to add it to "blacklist". Yes it was worth it, web pages much faster now.

For most is seems as simple as this, this seems to work for anything later than Dapper from my readings on it. I did it, didn't do anything.

1. Open a Terminal Window
2. Type sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/bad_list/
3. In the gedit window, type: alias net-pf-10 off
4. Save the file and reboot.

To make sure you no longer have ipv6 running, open a terminal window and type:
ip a | grep inet6

the directory your looking for is - /etc/modprobe.d/

I also did,,

the file "aliases", edit as sudo, and add,

alias net-pf-10 ipv6 off
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

#alias net-pf-10 ipv6 <--_ this already there comment it out with the #

So Look for "alias net-pf-10" inside "aliases" and comment it out, and add your 3 new lines above it.

That didn't do anything either, adding
blacklist ipv6
to the "blacklist" file disabled it for me. For all I know, it may have been the only thing I needed to do.

hope this helps,

last thing, when you type this in a terminal - ip a | grep inet6, any response of text means IPV6 is still enabled (2 short lines). When you type that and no text is displayed (meaning, no response),because it's now disabled.
