Ok here is the lowdown. My wife works for a Bank from home and we want to move her PC into her own office. We have cable connection in another room currently with my pc and hers both direct wired into our new Netgear wgr614 V4 router and everythign works perfect.

Her PC has to log into a secure VPN to be of any use to her and this also works flawless in the current setup.
Here is the problem she wants to go wireless to move her PC ** we do not want to run cable across the entire house**.
I hook up her Netgear Wireless WG311 pc adapter and it sets up fine and locates and connects to the network but is unable to connect to the internet or log into her VPN. I have searched and searched but cannot solve this problem.
Also my router sees her adapter in the attached devices lsit so i know it is installed and connected ok. I have tried to copy all info the same from the onboard ethernet that works fine into the wireless adapter and still no luck.

I hooked up the card in a 3rd pc in another room and it worked flawless

My PC & the 3rd is running XP her pc is running Win2k Pro. I removed the adapter and direct wired her again and no problem logged right in. Am i missing something here? something not set up right or is her pc not allowing a wireless connection? or is it unable to allow a VPN on this router? Netgear site has been little help

I have also tried making her machine a VMZ just to see if that would make a difference but it does not. Have also disabled router firewall with still no luck & have her VPN port forwarded on the router to her box . I have basically tried everything i know and no luck connecting to anything. internet , e-mail or VPN.

Also Netgear tech did nothing at all. Just told me to remove and re-install for the 50th time with still the same results.

that is correct it cannot connect to anything but yet shows connected to our network. if i remove the adapter and simply plug in the cat5e it works fine. also same card in another pc is able to connect and surf or whatever so i know the card is good. Let me please clarify as well that her pc is currently direct hooked into the router right now and is having no problems so i know it supports VPN at least. The only time she cannot log into the VPN or say surf internet is when i set her up as wireless on same router.

yeah key is correct. i have tried it several times as shared key and not still no luck. My router sees her PC since under wireless devices tab it shows her pc name. And her PC shows connected to network with excellent signal. Just cannot surf or connect to anything.

In XP there is a service specifically for WiFi compatibility and networking. YOu said the other machines have XP and hers 2K. Well, that WiFI service is Automatic by default.

Check her services and make sure it is on (if it is even there). I don't know much about 2K wireless support however.

Look at this thread on google groups:
<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=re:+Windows+2000+wireless+network&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=3fl7bvsc5eksbeirp0p9ign4v7djubimsq%404ax.com&rnum=5 Link</a>

Make sure you set up your gateway as 192.168.1.1. This happens to me even on a wired network if I don't do that because of my router. I just think you haven't completely setup your network connection right under TCP/IP

Google on Groups to see more threads.

Also, on the 2K machine, uninstall the drivers for the NIC. Reboot. Then if it finds new hardware, cancel that. Reinstall the drivers from the driver disc.

Thanks for a suggestions guys. I finally fixed the problem and all is working well. Was a simple setting on the router side to set the key to Automatic from shared. Then allow the PCI card to auto generate a key based on the Passphrase. Worked immediately.

The reason i did not have this problem on the XP machine is the software from Netgear installs much less and has fewer options for XP. It is more expanded on WIN2K and has to be setup more "manually"
