I have my PC hooked up to my TV, thinking of getting wireless controls to sit from the couch and play games and whatever and heard of lag in games... is this true ?

also are the mice and keyboards rechargeable or do they use AA batteries how long do batteries last ?

sorry i never had wireless controls so thats why i am asking these simple questions

it depends on which model. I had the Logitech G7 mouse ... and it had no lag whatsoever. I also have some logitech wireless keyboard and I don't notice any lag.

Most use AA batteries. I use rechargeable NiMh batteries and always have recharged spares handy for a quick swap. How long they will last depends on the amount of time you use the keyboard/mouse.

Used to have a wireless keyboard from logitech, batteries would last maybe 2 years with daily use from anywhere between 2-12+ hours at a go, no lag noted over the period I owned it till it dying recently (4 years of use), also own a G7, no lag whatsoever.

^ did the logitech use AA batteries as well ? and id you use rechargeable batteries ? i find that rechargeable batteries in AA form loose charge quicker the older they get and you also have to charge them properly and not over charge them

like you cant leave them plugged in the wall outlet for the whole night

I use the microsoft comfort wirless keyboard and microsoft wireless optical mouse 2.0 and dont notice any lag. It uses AA batteries, has a ton of extra features since it is made by microsoft, and is pretty cheap

IMO, wireless tech will never be as good/fast as wired

however it might be acceptable depending upon the user

some people are simply more sensitive to various things...

input/ghosting on LCDs are unbearable to some yet others can't tell the difference

128kbit mp3s sound like crap to some, but others can't tell distinguish it from a CD

Of course I also believe in a fanboy effect, where some (not all) people will blindly defend to the death their flawed product if only because they feel they payed good money for it and refuse to believe they made a bad decision or got a raw deal.

However! Because you're getting it to sit on your couch and play, I take it this is going to be a more relaxed environment of play, a good wireless kb/mouse is good enough even for someone like me (just don't expect to get too intense, you'll miss your awesome wired solution).

Really ay, yeah i guess thats true, to each is their own...

yeah even though i was thinking of gaming from the couch, i think my gaming is intense enough to warrant a fast response from my controls....it really sounds like it depends on the hardware quality as much as the user feel/neglect of lag:

So what do these devices use ? regular 2.4GHz ? wifi i duno, bluetooth ? what else is there ?

how do they work ? do they come with a wireless adapter or can i use my existing wireless router ?

thanks really to everyone who responded

That sounds like more of a problem with your computer sucking than the G7.

Mine has no discernible input lag.

I have tried wireless kb and mice for the past couple years...tried a few brands....ms, logitech, bluetooth, 2.4ghz and I have not found one that I thought was acceptable.....I am back to good old wired technology except for my theater room in which I use wireless for obvious reasons....bedroom is wired stuff.

No lag at all on my MX Revolution. Great mouse, has a pre-installed unchangable battery with its own cradle. Battery easilys lasts 3 days of good use and fully charges in less than 6 hours.

With my receiver 6" away or about 8 foot away, there is no discernable lag, slowdown, difference.

I do not support the theory that a good modern day wireless device lags noticably compared to a wired counterpart and has not done so for several years but I do concede that I have not been an avid FPS player in that time due to health reasons.

I'd agree with one caveat, there *can* be input lag if you allow the mouse to go to "sleep" by not moving for whatever the default sleep time is. The first move to wake it back up will be delayed. This was a common complaint on the G7 as it seemed to go to sleep faster than other wireless mice, like the MX700 and MX1000. I didn't really have any problems with the Revolution's sleep time, its maybe 60s which would never happen in any fast-paced game like an FPS.

I'm using a G9 now and I do notice the cursor control/movement is a bit more precise than the Revolution. Its not enough to get all worked up about though, if they made a wireless G9 I'd get it the day it became available.

Logitech MX Revolution mouse, and Logitech DiNovo keyboard. The only lag is if the mouse sleeps (if ur gaming it won't sleep obviously). I love the two.

For NiMH batteries you want a quality charger. Myself, I don't think the quick chargers are worth the extra convenience because there's a tradeoff on battery life expectancy. A good enough charger will allow you to set the chargerate yourself. IMO, the best bang for the buck in a quality charger is the La Crosse BC-900, which you can get for $35-40 last time I checked. That's what I use.

Also, nowadays you can get NiMH type AAs (and AAAs) that don't lose nearly as much charge/day just sitting around as ordinary ones do (or even NiCads). The best (but most expensive) are the Sanyo Eneloops but Rayovac Hybrids are cheaper, and don't lose all that much more charge. Plenty of info on batteries and chargers is available at Candlepower Forums, FYI.

I had the Logitech MX600 Mouse and MX3000 Keyboard and yes they lagged. During normal windows usage it doesn't matter but when it comes to gaming you can really feel the lag.
