Wireless mouse problems

Yesterday, we returned out Targus optical mouse (wired), as the mouse would sometimes stick and jump. Our other mice did not, so we returned it. We exchanged it for a Kensington (supposedly good) wireless optical mouse. Supposedly, all OS later than Windows 98 are supposed to detect it and run right away. Well, of course, the new laptop doesn't. It has all the Windows updates inluding SP2. It has a fresh installation of windows. All the drivers are updated. So what does the mouse do upon plugging the receiver in? Well, one of three things. It either:

1. Makes the standard noise of USB detection, the light comes on, and blinks when the mouse is in motion, but Windows claims the device is unknown and refuses to find any drivers for it.

2. Makes a "du du du du" sound, the light doesn't stay on constant, and the device is detected and listed in the device manager with a yellow exclamation mark. It will not update the drivers or anything.

3. It works. The mouse is installed, detected, and begins to work flawlessly, as it is supposed to. However, all this success is completely obliterated once the computer is restarted or the receiver is taken out and plugged in again. The HID driver detection that shows up in the device manager dissapears until the next success.

It is entirely random which senario happens, but it is usually the first one, and only rarely the last one. There has to be a reason for this bizzare behavior. BTW, it doesn't matter which USB port it is plugged into.

After getting very fed up, I called HP to have them help me, yet got no useful info. One guy had me try going to run, typing "fcp /scannow" and running that, but it was unsuccessful. Then when I called back, this guy had me uninstall all the USB stuff under the device manager, reinstall drivers from my driver CD, and all this did not work. He concluded that the receiver is not comptible with the mouse and that I go back to where we purchased the mouse, return it, then try various wireless mice until we find one that works with it. But I am not satisfied with this.

The weirdest thing is it works fine on my signature computer. I plug it in and it works instantly every time. Both PCs have Windows XP Home SP2 with all the win updates. They both started with generic mouse drivers for the existing touchpad/mouse.

It doesn't make sence! There has to be a reason for this behavior! Wrong/Bad driver somewhere, chipset incompatability, something.
The laptop is a custom zx5000 with a P3 3Ghz, Radeon 9600 128MB, 512MB RAM, etc. What should we do? Thanks!
