Wireless Networking Issue---- HELP !!!

Here's the problem...

I have a desktop and a laptop in my house. I have DSL internet service and I wish to also have internet access on my laptop while around the house. Thus, I see I need a wireless router and a wireless ethernet card for my laptop.

I'm not sure which pieces I need exactly.... According to the map, so far i know i need a WPC11 (wireless laptop card), WMP11 (wireless desktop card), and a WAP11(wireless network access point).... now, do I also need a Cable/DSL Firewall Router (BEFSR41X) ??

Please help me out as this is my first time trying to setup such a network.

Based on my limited knowledge, you would need...

Two nics for your PC (one for the DSL modem and teh other for the access point)
An access point
A wireless card for the notebook

Or, if you want a separate router, you could get...

An ethernet nic for the puter.
A DSL router (standard, with an ethernet switch)
An access point
A wireless nic for the laptop.

Wireless LAN consists on two main components.

1. Access Point (A/P).

Access Point is the Main Transmitter/Receiver that mediate between your LAN, or main computer, to the rest of the Network.

2. Wireless Client Card.

Wireless network Card is the LAN card that is installed on all the Computers that want to join the Network.

Most of A/P can control more then 200 computers equipped with Wireless Cards.

The basis of operation and setting on the computers is like regular LAN. The specific setting of the Wireless hardware is included with the Hardware manuals.

You buy a Wireless PCMCIA card, and install it on the Laptop, configure the drivers, and will be connected.[/b]
This is considered to be the best Client Card:

ORiNOCO PC Card - Gold.

If you don?t have Cable/DSL Router, you can buy a Wireless Cable/DSL Router, which is a Combo unit that includes Router to share the Internet, Switch for Wired Network and A/P for Wireless clients (plus more goodies).

The SMC Wireless Barricade is considered one of the favorites.

I just replaced the D-Link DWL-650 PC card with an ORiNOCO Gold PC card. Sustained throughput is 3 times better.

The D-Link DWL-650 uses the same (Prism2) chipset as the Linksys WPC11 (and many other cheap 802.11b PC cards). It's known as a budget solution.

I've read a lot of unenthusiastic reviews of Linksys 802.11b products.

As JackMDS said, the SMC wireless Barricade + ORiNOCO Gold is probably the best price/performance solution.

Assuming your DSL modem is next to your PC, if you also place the wireless router in the same vicinity, all you need is a regular Ethernet NIC for the desktop (it's much cheaper and faster than a wireless client).
