ok I bought this 3com home wireless gateway, here are the configurations of the network

one sony vaio running on winME with linksys WUSB11 wireless usb adapter
one computer running on win2k with the same adapter

the wireless gateway is installed in the room where sony vaio is running, the wireless adapter works (connects to the wireless gateway) while the other computer doesn't work. The icon is red (it somehow can't search the wireless gateway or something) instead of green. all configurations are the same between the 2 adapters. there is a wall between the rooms, it's dry wall and wood frame. I'm not sure what problem it could be can someone help???? it has been dragging on for months and my aunt is really pissed off

How far is the other computer from the access point? Did you make sure the ESSID is correct? What about the encryption? MAC access control in the access point? You might want to move the computer nearer to the access point and see if it is able to connect. Usually, it has something to do with the ESSID or encryption if the client is not able to connect. Try to reset the access point and reconfigure it.

checked everything from SSID to encryption... doesn't seem to work

the problem is i think it was getting 63% signal or so... now i don't get anything. I have no idea what's wrong.

Which 3COM access point do you have? Have you try to upgrade the firmware? The last resort is to call 3COM tech support and see what they have to say. I know 3COM doesn't list its tech support number on the website if you don't register, but here it is 800-638-3266.
Have you try to swap the wireless adapter? It could be a bad adapter. Tried new drivers? My colleague tested the 3COM WLAN 6000 Series and here is the review. He had some connection problem too but it was solved when he updated the drivers. If you are interested to get more details, here is the link 8wire.com

i'll try to update the firmware for the signal strength

the weird thing is that it used to work with ad-hoc (when i didn't buy the router). I also find that this linksys wireless USB adapter is EXTREMELY unreliable if i find it to be defective again (returned one already). Since it used to work with a 63% signal strength and ad-hoc i'd assume that this unit is screwed up somewhat... will swtich them tomoorow and see

ad hoc? Use Infrastructure. You can still use Infrastructure mode even if you are connected to a router. Don't tell me the set up is in Ad Hoc right now. If it is in Ad Hoc, you will not get connection as soon as the laptop leave the room. Infrastructure mode allows you to move the client 300 feet away (theoretically), and go through walls. I don't know about linksys, but if you ask me to recommend a good, descent WLAN at low costs, I would pick Xircom (currently Intel). I have been working with a number of WLAN products and this is the best so far for a low cost one.

it's definitely not in ad-hoc now

it was when i didn't buy the wireless router. It simply refuses to work in infrastructure mode (can't go through a drywall??)

it might be some software problems as well...
