I'm assuming you have at least one laptop and at least one desktop here. for laptops the pc cards are definatly my choice, I tend to prefer the usb nics for workstations due to the ability to move the antenae a little more and that the antenae are far less likely to get broken, replacements aren't cheap. But yes, you can mix brands, if you're new to this might I suggest going with the linksys equipment for all of it though, they are by far the simplest to set up for newbies, as they have great instructions.

i have two desktops using the microsoft wifi kit. Although i had some trouble installing the WAP on win2000, it's an excellent combo (usb card and wired/4 port wireless base station). Anything that's 802.11b is compliant with the next 802.11b device.

PCMCIA Wireless Cards that are plugged into Laptops, and USB Wireless Client.

Will work well with any 802.11b hardware.

==================================

PCI Wireless Cards comes in two flavors.

1. Solid PCI card, noting to plug in or out. Will work well with any 802.11b hardware.

2. PCI adapter with plug in PCMCIA Wireless Client.

The Adapter and the card have to be from the same brand, since many of these adapters will not work well with other brands PCMCIA Wireless Cards.

Connection Quality Wise.

1. PCMCIA
2. PCI
3. USB

However for desktop USB should be considered has the preferred solution.

The PCI end up been stuck behind the computer's case resultant in obstructed transmission.
USB is connected to the Port with 2-3? cable allowing the Antenna to be placed above the System for better Transmission.

As always with Wireless YMMV.

The "Wi-Fi" distinction is actually a certification by a vendor alliance whose purpose is to ensure 802.11b interoperability. When 802.11 (and then b) first came out, interoperability was a mess -- so, in those days, you just bought all Lucent WaveLAN (now branded Orinoco and sold to some company yet again) if you wanted it to really work. Vendors created the Wi-Fi group, standard, and certification to help vendors get together on this and to give customers some better confidence that arbitrary vendors' stuff would actually interoperate. So if it carries the "Wi-Fi" logo, that means it's supposed to interoperate with other "Wi-Fi" logo carrying equipment.

EXCEPT if there are extra proprietary "enhancements." Like the "802.11b turbo" from TI. Or enhanced security features from various vendors. You should be able to turn that stuff off and get all "Wi-Fi" equipment to interoperate at that baseline, however.

Do note that many vendors' PCI solutions are a PCI<->PCMCIA adapter card and their PCMCIA 802.11b card, and in general you need to get the adapter and the 802.11b card from the same vendor if you want to be sure it's going to work. (you can try mixing, some combinations work, some don't, but it's a ton of headache). I've never used the USB adapters but the argument made for them -- being able to get the antenna well above your PC case -- is a good one.

Basically in the Entry Level Arena they are PCMCIA.

Stuck in a PCI adapter they become PCI. (some are glued, some stay plug in).

Stuck in a small box with USB circuitry they become USB.

Actually a lot of Entry Level Access Point is PCMCIA Card in a bigger box, more circuits, and 2.2dbi Antenna.

Most of the Entry Level Brand do not bother about WIFI because they don not want to get late to the market and spend the certification money.

I used variety of cards and Access Point, very rare a straight Gateway setting is not compatible.

Compatibility problems show their ugly head when you use Access Points in Bridge or Client Mode.
