Is here any way to tell which PCMCIA cards are 16-bit?
I am buying a wifi card for a homeless guy's laptop and the thing looks pretty old, I assume it is 16-bit and thus can't take the newer types of pcmcia adapters.

Any way to tell?

I was going to buy him a usb wifi adapter but then realized they usually require win 98SE, which I doubt he is running.

For a PCMCIA you'll need an early 802.11b card (such as Netgear MA401 ... or other early Intersil chipsets.) ... you wont be able to buy new ... (I doubt) ... You'll have to try eBay ...

However, the best way would be to look on line for the manual for the notebook and see what it says ... (chances are, if it has USB, it'll have 32bit PCCard)

At the moment the best performance for the price is: D-Link Extreme G Bundle Kit ($89 after rebate) :light::light::light:

Bundle= Super G Wireless Cable/DSL Router + Super G capable PCMCIA Cardbus.

Why?

802.11b vs. 802.11g.

The following refers too Entry Level Systems that are usually equipped with < 50mW radios, come with 2dbi antennae, and cost bellow $100.

For Internet surfing it does mot matter since in most cases Internet broadband connection is slower than 802.11b.

For traffic across Internal LAN, 802.11g is significantly faster.

As a frame of reference. The transfer "Speed" of a Good Windows based 100Mb/sec. Network is 70 to 80Mb/sec. (b=bits 8bits=1Byte)

These are the most common used Wireless standard and their official rating.

802.11b = 11Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)
802.11g = 54Mb/sec. Network "Speed" (Carrier transmission 2.4GHz)

Wireless Ethernet needs additional protocol over head for the transfer. In addition, it is not as stable as Wired so it needs extra processing procedures.

As a result the 11Mb/sec. of the Network chipset is translated to a much lower actual performance. Usually 4-6Mb/sec.

Few 802.11b hardware units are also capable to work at 22Mb/sec. (usually referred to as b+) it is nice if it works, in real term will yield 20%-40% more than 11Mb/sec. systems.

The 802.11g line that is rated 54Mb/sec. in the real world it yields 18-22Mb/sec.

***Does 802.11g provides more Distance than 802.11b?***

The answer is Yes and No.

Since the frequency and the output power of 802.11b and 802.11g hardware are similar, the general distance that they cover is similar.

That means that if you have an envioroment that "Kills" the signal it will "Kill" them both.

However if you have a weak unusable 801.11b signal at 50? (just a numerical example) 802.11g might provide a working signal at the same distance since it provides more bandwidth.

Log the following page. The differences between the first set of graphs to the second represent the performance differences between 802.11b to 802.11g

Link to: 802.11a/b/g SOHO Routers & Access Points: Performance

Notice how the D-Link and Netgear Super G Stick above the rest of the Crowd.

Note. If you go with Super G all Wireless units should be of the same Brand.

At the moment the best performance for the price is: D-Link Extreme G Bundle Kit ($89 after rebate)

On Distance in general.

2.4Ghz. is the microwave band; it looses energy on Water molecules. It is susceptible to 2.4GHz noise, and there is a lot of it around (Microwaves, Cordless Phones, etc.)

Indoor, No obstructions (no walls, or Baroque type furniture), it will go up to 100' -120'

Once walls get in to the equation it is a fast decline.

One or two "flimsy" (i.e. not concrete full of metal) walls will yield 40-70'.

Three walls or more? You never know until you try.

If you are almost there, a good external Antenna can save you.

Outdoor with Entry Level Equipment as is out of the box. You can get above 100'

With Direct line of sight using High towers and very good directional Antennae it can work for few miles.

How come no mention of the buffalo airstation wireless g router at COMPUSA $100 - $30 rebate = $70?

From what I understood from older messages is that this wireless g router can be used as a router or a wireless ethernet bridge?

So, if my ethernet connection is in my bedroom and I plug 1 airstation into it, and my xbox is in my living room, I need a second airstation plugged into the xbox for it to bridge? I can then also plug a replay into the 2nd airstation?

Thanks for the help...pls correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. Are there any other cheap wireless g ethernet bridge solutions...I can't seem to find any that would be cheaper than the 2 buffalo airstation idea.

P.P.S. My laptop is already wireless g enabled with a minipci card. Is there any way my xbox can plug into my laptop ethernet port and use the laptop as a bridge?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Re: PPS ... yes - you could do internet sharing ... you would just need a crossover cable ... and the x-box would hide behind the laptop in the same way as your laptop hides behind the router ...

Dangit when is the linksys WRT54G going to go below $80. I really want to try out that enhanced firmware from a couple of those groups since linksys released the source code on thier webpage for that router. Bandwidth shaping/managment, DCHP with static IP assignment by MAC, wireless transmitter power adjustment, etc etc.

I recently bought a 802.11b D-Link router and have been waiting for a decent PCI deal, but they are all priced at >$25. Was thinking of getting a USB adapter instead, but was not sure if it will bring my wireless speed even further due to the USB 1.1 interface. It actually come to somewhere close to the 802.11b speeds, but then there are the USB protocol overheads, aren't there?

Anyways, can someone shed some light on the differences between the PCI and USB adapter? If USB is a viable option can someone suggest an adapter that will work with a D-Link?
BTW, I have the router in the basement and the 2nd PC is on 2nd floor, i.e. signal has to travel 2 floors.

Thanks!!

You can try this. I don't know if it worthwhile but it is $14 bucks shipped AR. In case I mess up:www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10357239&loc=14757

Secondly, the pci card has a little fixed antenna. The usb adaptor allows better reception since you can move the adaptor around. You can also purchase/build an antenna for your pci card but the connector is often hard to find

I wish people would read the thread ... anyway ...
USB1.1 12Mbps
802.11b 4-5Mbps (yes, 802.11b is advertised as 11Mbps, but thats including error correction / wireless protocols etc ... in reality it PEAKS at 45% efficiency) ...
Broadband 1Mpbs-3Mbps
so no, you are not getting anywhere near USB speeds ...

I'd recommend USB over PCI ... you will not notice any speed issues ... and you can move the USB device to a sweet spot for the wireless network ... bear in mind that that wireless signals radiate out from the sides of the antenna and not along the antenna, it you are directly above the router turn at one of the antenna on the router horizontal, and leave the antenna on the USB unit horizontal as well.

albrandwood, thanks for the quick explanation. Yes, I am at fault for not reading the entire thread :-( Seems as the USB solution should work better.

Kostya, eCost.com has the Syntax USB adapter for $4 after shipping.

Does anybody here have experience with this product; not too many reviews on it...

Thanks!

I'm not keen on this style of USB adapter, since you loose the advantage of moving it to the sweet spot ... (and it wont work that well if the desktop is positioned between the router and the adapter ... )

If you do get this kind, I'd recommend at least getting a 3' USB extension cable ... but I prefer the ones like the Belkin / Linksys / SMC which are on decent length cables.

I just ordered a Netgear WGR614NA from amazon. 56.89 - 20.00 rebate, free shipping, no tax (in NC).
36.89 after rebates, for a 802.11G router.
