I recently set up (or attempted to) a wireless network at home with the netgear MR814v2 wireless router. The router is hooked up to my desktop and everything works fine. the problem is my laptop. the laptop has a wireless card and is getting full signal, but no internet. the ip for the laptop starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, instead of 192.xxx.xxx.xxx. I tried releasing the ip address on the laptop, but still nothing. Anybody know what's going on or what i'm doing wrong? thanks in advance

Are you running Windows XP? If so, instead of letting Windows configure your wireless network settings, uncheck that box and try configuring through your wireless card's configuration program. That exact same thing happened to me today after I installed XP on one of my computers

Check to see if DHCP is enabled. Also, check to see if MAC filtering is on, or if your WEP configuration is correct.

Are they on the same subnet mask?
did you specify the gateway ip on your notebook comp?
what about zonealarm?

DoubleUhat, yes they are on the same subnet mask. i entered 192.168.0.1 for the gateway and nada. no zonealarm either. more suggestions would be appreciated

this is what I would do, go into your router, see if DHCP is setup correctly. For mine (Dlink DI-614+) there is a section that tells which computer is getting what ip address. See if your wireless notebook shows up. make sure the settings for the wireless card is set to DHCP enabled, not a value that is manually added. I'll think of something more later....going to sleep now

i had this problem with an smc wireless card

it would ALWAYS detect the wireless network, but wouldnt connect if the card was in when the laptop powered up ...i found that just pulling out the pcmcia card and putting it right back in caused it to see the network, connect to it, and then it would get online just fine

If you have a way to hard wire plug in the Laptop, do that once. Sometimes it helps to force the machine to obtain an IP from the router once. The only way to make sure that happens is by hard wire. Then reboot with the wireless card only.

Basically, you card can see the wireless network, but isn't getting an IP from the network. Check to see that your card is set to obtain an IP address from the network (dynamic IP).

If that doesn't work, try setting up your card with a fixed IP like 192.168.0.25 and subnet of 255.255.255.0 and see if you get on. Like the first comment I made this would force the machine to work on that network. You could then change it back to dynamic and see if it remembers how to talk to that router.
